working on a new garden area out front of the guest house at my parents. I’m really grateful because I do feel like I have my own place and basically its like a hotel room with a porch and steps or whatever.. Still putting most things in pots but I bought some lumber to make a raised bed but its more work then I thought to dig out the roots and BS under the ground.. but here is a couple photos of the space I have and I feel like there is lots of options..
I have to somehow figure out how much sunlight I get over here and basically just construct the bed and just plants some seeds and see what happens

Got to work on this when I can .. I swear these roots are never ending. This is my third session I guess you could say working on this ground for the raised bed.. to be honest, though, I like the work and it keeps my mind and body occupied plus it’s not too bad only 55° tonight
The bed is going to be to the top left of that photo next to the fence and where the sidewalk is.. this is only going to be a small one 4‘ x 4‘ and mostly just to mess around and use this for growing things that might be more difficult just to test it out
The bed is already constructed and just getting the ground really good before I fill it in with soil. Hopefully I only need three or four bags. Definitely been taking my time with this one, but also this is the most ridiculous ground I ever had to work with, but I don’t know what I expected. It’s surrounded by trees. I read that trees root system can grow really far out under the ground..

This is my second bed on this property.. I’m especially excited about this one though but honestly so much more work to do before I plant any seeds and need to research what I can grow from seed that only needs like 4 hours a day of direct or decent sunlight. I might go as far as to cut and trim down all the over grown stuff above but not sure.. never did that before but probably won’t stop me from trying. Also probably need a decent amount of soil to fill in the bed.
I have that planter that right now is just holding rocks and other debris.. might be cool to grow some flowers or herbs in that as well
Seriously can’t wait till it’s light out till 8pm and 90 degrees!

OK, I think I’m finally ready to add the soil and go to get some seeds.. been working on this ground for like three weeks. I’m going to have to get really creative with this area because there’s only three or four hours of sunlight and I need to trim some of the trees above. This is my second raised bed on this property and starting with small ones so I can learn.
I found a planter also that I filled with soil and cleared out all the BS. something about being out here and the anxiety just goes away hearing the birds and animals and just having something to work on. Very grateful.
Also, I thought about painting the bed, but I don’t know if the chemicals will get into the soil and affect the plants or anything like that?

I’m going up to Lowe’s to get some spinach seeds. That’s what I decided to mainly focus on and grow in this second raised bed I made.. This time of year where I live in north Florida actually has so many options for gardening from seed. A lot of my favorites vegetable and herb wise are good for growing right now..
Also thinking radishes , carrots and cilantro

I ended up going with these seeds because the chart on the back said it was good for this time of year and location. I really want to grow spinach but online said now it was a good time but the seeds on the back said not so I’m not sure. I was half joking about growing chamomile with one of my friends, but I’m actually going to try. I’m not sure if I’m going to start a decent amount of this in pots or little seeds starters and then put in the ground or if I’m going to Just put them in the bed right away

Cilantro does really well in shade, Trevor! If you like it in your cooking (and people tend to feel really strongly about cilantro either way), you could be set up for months!

Thanks!

Also, I was thinking about trimming some of this overgrown stuff above the bed so the sunlight can get to this better, but do you even think it’s worth it or really anybody that’s on this thread? Is it a waste of time or will it help and really I don’t even know how to give these trees a haircut? I don’t know what it’s actually called but that’s basically what I’m trying to do so the sunlight can get to the bed better. Luckily, it’s not covering the whole entire bed, but portions are blocked off by this overgrown mess above
Plus need to find a crazy tall ladder

Fresh mow happy snap. Dont so much get into the gardening small stuff now other then chillis, lemon grass and the easy type stuff and really like the fruit tree collection i got going.
Left to right.
- Red chicken coop, no chickens atm
- Lychee tree, already ate this seasons crop
- pawpaw tree, some on it but bats usually beat me to them when yellowing🤣.
- Red dacca banana tree.
- Weeping mulberry tree, usually scattered but the birds raid it now they figured it out
.
- A passionfruit vine on an aluminium pool fence i rotated 90 degrees and made a climbing rack. First fruits starting to redden and just ate one before.
