Hi my name is Jonathan, it’s time for me to make a change

I want to start off with an introduction. My name is Jonathan and I’m a Veteran coming off Active duty military service(Army) for 6 years. As I got out of the military I realized that I have an unhealthy addiction to alcohol and its effects. It’s normalize in the military to drink and have fun, but up to recent troubles with the law, I didn’t realize the Social, emotional, and financial impact this addiction was causing. I recently lost an amazing relationship with someone that I loved and she loved me, because I drank too much and portray disgusting behaviors that under a sober mind I wouldn’t do. After almost 4 days of dealing with homelessness, loss of my relationship and financial hardship that I feel like I woke up finally. Is it too late? Part of me believe so as I lost so much already, but part of me also believes that I can be better and get back to where I was and beyond. I am now 3 heading into 4 days sober and I hope joining a wonderful community inspires me to be who I want to be.

It’s never too late! The first step is admitting you have a problem and working to fix it. Congratulations :tada:

Welcome Jonathan xxx yes, the time is now, and you can be who you want to be.

4 days is a WONDERFUL start and you should be very proud of yourself :tada: welcome!

I am new too so I wont pretend to give advice too much, but from the hours and hours ive spent on here and in AA Ive heard many things about “the gift of desperation” or something along those lines. Thats what happened to me, finally got desperate enough, and it sounds like you are there too my friend. So change is possible! :green_heart:

Morning Jonathon, fellow Vet here and I can relate to everything you say, especially about the drinking culture in the military. I’m only 33 days in myself, but this amazing group has loads of support. I find logging in here every day really helps. Four days in is a great start, you’ve got this! One day at a time, please keep us updated.

Welcome @Jonathan23 its never too late. Maybe this is the wake up call you needed to make a change in your drinking habits. Thats good motivation.

This community, therapy, AA meetings, and working the 12 steps with a sponsor has helped support me thru my journey. You’ll find different people have different journeys on their road to recovery but a common theme is putting in the work.

The best piece of advice i received was dedicate as much time to recovery as you had your habit DAILY.

P.s. theres housing priority for veterans you just need to sign up with a local housing nonprofit. Theres also addiction support thru the va
