I do Krav Maga, which includes KAPAP (Israeli stick fighting). In addition to my hanging heavy bag and double end bag, I have one of these. Good for boxing, kick boxing and stick fighting

I’ve always loved that they make these things with scowls/mean face.

I think if I had one, and it had a smile, I’d just be quoting Joe Pesci the whole time I was hitting it

“What, do I amuse you? You think I’m funny, like a clown, huh?!”

Oh that is very awesome! Hubby doesn’t practice much currently with his sticks, but he does grab them from time to time and go through some of what he learned. That “dummy” is fantastic. It would be very beneficial with going through like the 12 strikes and all that instead of just the air so to speak. It is so different to be actually striking something or having someone to spar with. He got me my own set of sticks so we could do some simple single sinawalis and double sinawalis, but I haven’t had the formal training like he has so it isn’t like sparring with someone who really actually knows what they are doing, but sometimes, especially in times like these with covid, something or someone is better than nothing!

Air fighting/shadow boxing, bag work, and live sparring all have their place and a student is not balanced without all three. I do a bunch of knife work, first in front of a mirror so I can check my form, then on the B.O.B. to build my accuracy, and then with a partner to pressure test everything. When we spar we use chalked knives and shock knives. The chalk shows where we are getting cut, and the shock knives build resistance to pain, to keep fighting even when cut.

You are absolutely right, all those different forms of practice to most definitely have their place. It certainly sounds like you have been training for sometime now as well as a very effective way to train (ie in front of the mirror first, on the BOB, and then with a partner). That is awesome. Knives work would be pretty kick ass if I do say so myself!

If you are comfortable with sticks, knife work will come easy, as the movements are very similar. It’s just distance and risk that changes. I do more with knives than sticks, as the likelihood of having to defend against a knife attack is greater.

Ahh I see your point (haha, no pun intended!) But yes, knives just in general would be much easier to conceal too so if one was to be attacked it would be more likely with a knife rather than a stick.

I’m just starting to put mine together in half of the basement. I ordered a new incline bench because I broke mine. Built small DB racks out of some extra wood I had for some of the smaller weights. Made a pull-up bar out of 1 inch iron pipe, was able to get my treadmill down there. So it’s coming along
