Dracunculiasis, also known as Guinea Worm Disease, is a parasitic infection caused from drinking contaminated water. This disease has been eliminated in most parts of the world, but still exists in Chad, Ethiopia, Mali, and South Sudan.

Usually the disease has no symptoms initially. About one year later, there is a painful burning feeling as a blister forms, usually on the legs. The blister bursts as the worm then comes out of the skin over a few weeks.
The worm can be pulled out a few centimeters each day. The process usually takes weeks. Permanent damage is uncommon.

The process of “pulling” the worm out is lengthy and tricky because if the worm breaks during removal it can cause intense inflammation as the remaining part of the dead worm starts to degrade inside the infected person’s body. This causes more pain, swelling, and cellulitis.

In 1963 a resident of Nevsehir Province, Turkey discovered a mysterious room behind a wall in his room. This opened up to a network of tunnels and passages, revealing an entire underground city.

This city, known as the Derinkuyu Underground City extends to a depth of about 85 meters/279 feet, and was built to shelter up to 20,000 people together, alongside livestock, wine/oil presses, cellars, reflectories, chapels and storage rooms. Inside was also located a 55 meter/180 foot well.

Historically, Derinkuyu has been used and abandoned many times. It was built somewhere between 780-1180 AD during the Arab-Byzantine wars. It has been used as a hiding place for refugees during many other wars. Derinkuyu is not the only underground city in the region. Several other notably large underground cities used to be connected to it through a series of many kilometer tunnels.

Because of the regions unique geological formation, volcanic rock made for ideal tunneling conditions. More than 200 underground cities with at least two levels have been discovered in the area.

I honestly can’t believe I’ve never shared this before. This chemical reaction happens to be one of my favorite natural phenomena. Mercury Thiocyanate is a compound that when exposed to extreme heat produces a rapid, exothermic reaction. The breakdown of the compound forms a coiling “snake-line” structure. This reaction has been nicknamed Pharoah’s Serpent. Certain Firework manufacturer’s have begun to sell these in a convenient package. Other names include things like “Pharoah’s Snake”, “Sugar Snake” or the “Black Snake”.

Firework versions are less dramatic because they use a sugar compound instead of the original chemical compound, which produces toxic fumes and must be properly disposed of according to biohazard regulations.

One of my favorite reactions. Never did it myself, but you can do a similar reaction with powdered sugar and concentrated sulfuric acid. BTW, if I’m not mistaken Cobalt thiocyanate is used in cocaine testing kits.
