Nonalcoholic Beverages, yay or nay?

I would like to know others input, thoughts and opinions on drinking nonalcoholic beer and wine.

I was considering trying a nonalcoholic wine, but wanted to get some input beforehand. I don’t want a reset. It has 0.05 ABV.

Hey K 82. I believe there are a couple of threads about this on here.

I even weighed in during my early sobriety. A definite no for me. But after almost 2 years I did try some pretty decent tasting non alcoholic beer at my sons house and it was pretty good. And so was the dealcholized wine. But I didn’t feel right drinking it. I tried it again for New Years but it just isn’t for me.

Well I guess this one is beer. You asked about wine. Close enough I reckon.

Big NAY . it will lead to lifting the real drink

For me, non alcohol beer and wine just make me want the real thing. I stay away from anything that may even have a trace of alcohol in it, I guess I am afraid that even a trace will start up my obsessive thinking.

I agree with @Bluekoolaid. There’s so many good drinks out there that can replace the alcoholic (or non) drinks. For me, it’s all psychological. What I’ve found, that again works for me, is replacing the sensation of a beer can in my hand with a can of sparkling water.

You CAN find NA booze, but it never tastes as good, so I say, don’t chance it. Find something tasty and enjoy that.

Why do you think you’re considering it now with your amount of sober time?

I do drink an AF beer every once in a while, I didn’t drink much beer in active addiction and they’re refreshing. I stay far away from AF versions of wine and spirits which were my deal.

Just to piggy back off what @Dazercat posted, here’s another thread with a bunch of info already posted

There are lots of varying opinions on this. For me personally, I keep a 6 pack of Heineken 0.0% in the fridge for when I “want a beer.” - particularly during get together a or a football game. I enjoy still “fitting in.” It has never been triggering for me, and I’m not sure why. Perhaps because back in the day I only supplemented my liquor with beer on the side, it wasn’t my main beverage.

However, every individual is different. For some it leads them right back to drinking. It’s a tricky call as to how you will respond. Proceed with caution

I personally don’t see the point. I didn’t drink because I liked the taste, I drank because I wanted to be drunk. I guess I just get confused when people have non-alcoholic drinks, it just seems like it’s still grasping at that dream of being “normal” and not totally sold on sobriety. That’s just my opinion of course.

Sober is normal, poisoning our bodies is not. :slightly_smiling_face:

My former sponsor used to say that non alcoholic beverages are for nonalcoholics. I tend to agree in my opinion they’re a bridge to the real thing.

Everyone will have their own opinions on this topic. I do drink NA wines and beers. For me my triggers were never the taste but the tipsy feeling….once the buzz starts I need more and more so as long as I don’t get buzzed I’m good. But for others non alcoholic versions will only make the drinker want the real stuff.

The thing is what will they do for YOU!! Will having a NA beer make you want a real one??

At nine months sober I went to a NYE gathering and treated myself to an NA IPA beer that was delicious. I only drank one and enjoyed it. I drink sparkling water pretty much constantly and when around others drinking. Also, I was nine months sober and when I was heavily drinking I only drank boxed red wine. I hear the NA wines aren’t good, and I definitely won’t be trying them as that was my drink of choice to get drunk.

Same here. I’ve met one individual who has pulled it off for 11 years now. But I will say he is also not the happiest person and not pleasant to be around.

For me drinking was about getting drunk, not appreciating the taste of beer or liquor. I’m going with nay, plus there are so many drink choices that taste much better than beer or liquor.

That’s me 100%. I’m sober BECAUSE I have an n/a option.

Hi!!
When I was trying to stop drinking I failed miserably most of the time after only a couple of days.
To break the habit I started to put na beer in my fridge mixed up with other drinks and I just drank what ever came to hand.

I really believe it helped me in some sort of way because going to the fridge and taking a drink was instilled in my day, after a while I was able to drink a few na beers and then just stop.

At the end of the day, every person is different and if you like it, go for it. It’s not hurting anyone.
