The Dutch didn’t win a medal yet. Didn’t take that long in 40 years or something. It will come. My focus of the first week is on my nephew, who’s competing in the single scull rowing competition. He’s looking good so far, had his second race this morning. He beat the defending Olympic champion from Greece and the Croatian silver medaillist from Tokyo with ease. Semi final on Thursday next, hopefully followed by the final on Saturday morning. Go Simon!

You know a sport I had no idea about until I lived in China?
Ping pong (aka table tennis).
It is huge, like huuuuuuge in China (and neighbouring places like Korea). It is a huge deal.
Watching world-class players play table tennis is next-level. They are intense!

Wow, Simon is rowing strong! Exciting watching him row: when he gets a rhythm going he is intense.
His next appearance is in the semifinals (men’s single sculls, for anyone searching), on August 1, at 09:50 (in the morning), Paris time. The Olympics YouTube channel has a whole long list of live streams and they live-streamed the quarterfinals today; I assume they will be live-streaming the semifinals too, for anyone who wants to see Menno’s family kick some butt!

It’s beach volleyball for me. There are courts on almost every public beach here (southern California, USA). You grow up playing on the weekends.

The US played their first match of the Games a few days ago, against Canada - it was a good match, lots of skill; I think the Americans played a tighter game overall. Fun to watch!

No one’s mentioned the equestrian events yet 
There are some brilliant performers in this Games, including Germany, Great Britain, the USA, and Denmark fielding strong solos and teams in dressage:
France, Great Britain, Australia, and Germany fielded some strong teams in eventing - basically a triathlon for horses

German favourite Ollie Zeidler wanted to send a message in the other semifinal, rowing an Olympic record to win. It will be a nerve wrecking final Saturday morning. Simon thinks he can win. It’ll be close. Go Simon!
