I switched streams after 5 minutes. Thought it wasn’t my thing, but you might be right and it was just very bad. So back to cycling and track and field it is for now.
takes the Womens Basketball gold with France inches away from a tying point We were all dying in this arena!!!
Congrats to the Aussies too with the bronze!! What a good game!!
Anyone want to join me in CA for the 2028 games in LA? LOL
Wow - what a collection of teams! Powerhouse players. It must. Have been thrilling to watch that
The Netherlands women’s team beat USA for the bronze in water polo - a close game at 11-10: both teams played hard and Netherlands came out the winner (congrats!) - and both teams are getting cheers from the USA’s new water polo hype man, Flavor Flav. Go team!
Here’s me training with Harrie last year (Harrie was having a leak).
And here’s Harrie after winning his third gold this morning.
BTW, sixth in the medal table! The UK the only European country doing better (but are they even European?). This will never happen again.
Wow! What a result. Your team is on fire this year!
Right, because next year it’s fourth on the medal table (watch out Australia! ).
Yeah it was only for these olympics. In L.A. there will be Baseball, Crosse and Cricket as new (temporary I guess) sports !
The Australian girl won’t be forgotten, a new meme queen is born. Damn that was something
The whole way break got into the Olympics - pushed by a group not affiliated in any way with break dancing - was disgraceful, and the Aussie lady who took selections for a ride and denied actual worthy breakers’ a chance at representing Australia is even more disgraceful.
The fact some are cheering her for “having a crack” is also disappointing. You don’t get to go to the Olympics to “have a crack”… you go because you represent the best skill and ability in the given discipline. Does this mean we can all go and “have a crack”?
She took the piss out of the whole thing.
Bloody poor form
I disagree.
Not with disliking the breaking performances at this year’s Olympics - beauty (and art) is in the eye of the beholder - but I think it merits an equal consideration for continued presence on the Olympic roster, in the right host country and city.
It meets the standards for inclusion as an Olympic event, but to me it’s deeper than that. Breaking may have begun as a named art form in the Bronx, but its characteristic elements, including specifically the performance art aspects, the friendly competitive community, the way it is like physical poetry, written on the spot; the way breaking is both creative and responsive; the way the art is like improvising a story on the spot with the body -
All of that positions breaking as a very strong candidate for inclusion in the right Olympics, and here’s why:
One of the standards for inclusion (or exclusion) of a particular sport from the Olympic roster for a given host city and year has to do with the popularity of the sport in the host country (it’s standard #33 of the Olympic event selection criteria). Breaking is very popular in France (and receives more public support and funding than it does in the States). It also isn’t a coincidence, I think, that France has a vibrant community of folks with roots in west Africa (to me, when I see breaking, I see its artistic and performance characteristics as cultural descendants of the vibrant oral, poetic, and rhythmic traditions of west Africa, transmitted across the centuries to the Bronx and from there to the world).
Aside from event popularity, other criteria include legacy (criterion 8) and youth (criterion 9), both of which are amply met by breaking.
Will breaking return to the Olympics? Maybe yes, maybe no - the presence (and absence) of baseball at the Olympics over the years is an example of how things can change back and forth from decade to decade and from host country to host country - but I think it’s a good choice for the right host country, and the right host city.
Personally, I watched the quarter-, semi-, and finals of the breaking and I liked it. To me it reminded me of figure skating: dancing and sliding around on a smooth surface, to music.
And maybe we can get those MCs from the Olympic breaking events hyping up the crowd at the figure skating events in the next Winter Olympics
I am looking forward to seeing lacrosse in action in LA! I’ve never played the sport myself but it is very popular near me in Canada (there’s a league that plays all summer long on the fields near my house). It’s intense and fun to watch
It’s over
I’m a big athletics fan and from GB so I loved Keely’s win and 9 fantastic other track & field medals. Fair play to USA though. They just couldn’t stop winning. And shout outs to Netherlands, as well as France in the Games overall, leaving us only third in the European table. I’m not used to seeing that!
Anyway, what am I gonna do now?
Carry on running myself, that’s what
Oh yes I had to check on YouTube the first time I’ve heard this Lacrosse mentioned. As I’m also canadian I’m very interested in seeing this sport, I love the fact that it is originally a first nation sport and simply it looks like a cool sport to watch ! C’est l’fun!
It’s a while back now during the opening ceremony, but man I keep coming back to this performance by Gojira. Fuckin incredible. Major kudos to whoever made the choice to bring them in for the performance and not go with a safe/conventional option.
I thought that was awesome too! Thanks for posting it. France did a hell of a great job overall hosting the Olympics. Watched and loved the closing ceremony too.
YES!!! Incredible is the term
Go watch them live when they visit your city, they’re mind blowing live, and they often tour worldwide
Ah ça iraaa
Yeah, Kavinsky with Angel was so cool
The US CRUSHED all other countries for total medals won. I am so pround to be an American. Our girls and guys performed great. The track and field ladies were awesome. Broke records, won Gold, Silver, Bronze, Sha’Carri Richardson gave the cold stare to her closest competitors as she blew past them in the anchor leg of the women’s 4x100 relay. Katie Ledecky was so far ahead of everyone in the 1500 m women’s freestyle that they were not even in the picture frame of the cameras. May as well just hand her all the Gold medals in her races because she is that much better than all other competitors. Wow. Girl is amazing. And she still loves competing for America, so we might just see her one more time in the LA Olympics.
