Dude. I think you might legit be a plant wizard. Even stock photos of lithops I see aren’t blooming.
Edited to say that these don’t look like lithops. Wizard comment still stands.

Added a few fruit trees to my backyard today. A strawberry Guava, a dragon fruit and some sort of olive tree.
As they say, the best time to plant a fruit tree is 10 years ago. The second best time is right now.
Same family of plants, so you’re not far off. I"ll take the title!
Is an orchid a good starter plant? One of my family plans to give me an orchid when we rearrange my room but I don’t have a clue how to properly care for it. Is it okay indoors? All I know is not to water it too much but how seldom should I only water it? Any tips for orchid care please, plant peeps? ![]()

I want a plant in my room so it’ll look nice and for air filtering. I’d also like to try out one of my buddies’ suggestions that taking care of something alive can help me have added purpose, redirect my sadness onto caring for the plant, and it’ll be good for my mental health too. ![]()
I had an orchid many years ago that I managed to bring to bloom a few times. Unfortunately I drank a lot back in those days so I don’t remember how I did it. I think an orchid would be a very fulfilling plant to try to tend because it has pretty specific needs. Just don’t be too hard on yourself if it doesn’t go well the first time around.
And… show us pictures. ![]()

Thank you, and I will ![]()
Well, I have my first markets squared away. First will be in 3-4 weeks, and another a week after that.
Wrapping up the administrative stuff, which is somehow both straightforward and confusing. Apparently I don’t need to register with the state since I’m a sole proprietor. Feels wrong but I’ve looked it up several ways and seems true. I am registering my DBA with the Secretary of State, but that is a non-required formality. THANKFULLY non-required because I mightn’t have approval for a month.
Apparently I also don’t need a state-level business license since I’m not starting an LLC etc.
I have a shiny new federal tax ID, which you can surprisingly get in mere minutes. I have my state/county/local tax permissions approved. It seems all that’s left is my local city business license, which I can get on-the-spot by showing up in person with my completed application. Think I’ll do that Monday. That will also give me the chance to talk to someone to confirm I have everything I need (hopefully).
Part of me feels like there should be more…but reading online and asking my friend who opened her coffee business, it does seem that’s it. Makes me anxious!
Trying to accept that it’s an entirely new thing for me, and there’s a chance I might have to eat shit at some point due to an administrative error or otherwise, but I also might not. It’s a learning process.
Congratulations on booking your first event! That’s so exciting! I can imagine the administrative stuff is confusing but it’s good that you have a friend who’s started a business who can guide you a bit. You’ve got this!
Im so invested in your new endeavor and have enjoyed watching your new creations. I wish you luck in your endeavor and hope you have fun at the markets.
You had talked about putting little info cards with your pots. What are those including/look like? Just curious. And im invested lol
way to turn a passion into something greater! You do it for a season and if it works out good and if it doesnt you have new lovelies for your collection and some tax writeoffs.
Not sure yet, playing with some ideas. I have plenty of time for that, thankfully.
Probably done for today, just wanted to do a few.
Made another sempervivum arrangement similar to the one from last weekend (bottom right and top left, respectively). Strongly considering keeping one for myself. We’ll see.
I almost never work with traditional leafy succulents, and will likely continue to keep that rare. It’s not my style and I plan to stay true to that, even though I know people love that stuff. I’ll sprinkle one in here and there when I feel it. Due to the season, I’ve been doing haworthias and aloe almost exclusively. This will mix things up a bit on my table come next month.
I love the espresso mug idea ![]()
I did get something for myself this weekend - espostoa melanostele inermis, which grows in high altitudes in Peru. “Inermis” meaning spineless – which is almost true, they’re just really tiny and concealed by the dense wool.
It will pair well with its cousin from high altitudes in neighboring Argentina/Bolivia, my oreocereus trollii that I got ~2 yrs ago and is due for a repot of its own, it has grown a lot.
(Homer Simpson voice: Mmmmmm….oreoooo
)
The wool is a natural adaptation that protects from frost as well as the blazing sun.
Funny how winter seemingly just ends in the desert. Nothing gradual.
High 60s during the day yesterday, 30s overnight/this AM, near freezing.
Up into the 80s today, with nights in the 50s, and according to the forecast, nothing but up from here.
First big watering of the year for the gang. Most notably my desert roses, which have been dormant and indoors without a drop since October.
More stress colors for @TrustyBird
Finally migrated my agave potatorum from the greenhouse to the front stoop, and repotted into something larger. Had to do it soon so it can acclimate before the sun gets too strong. After a year alone on the stoop, my yucca that lives outside now has her old buddy from the greenhouse. Coincidentally I bought them around the same time, late 2021. Together again. Everyone needs a friend!
Absolute birds nest of a root network.
Also repot day for pachypodium brevicaule now that growth is beginning for the season. Ideally this is its “forever pot”. It grew much faster than they’re supposed to. Had to smash the skull pot to get it out unfortunately, wasn’t budging… but it was only $2 so no major loss.
Have the tips gone white because it is too stressed? Beautiful gradients.
The tips are dried out/dead. That was there when I got it 3 months ago or so. Not uncommon for haworthia/aloe, especially when small, and even more so with the sun and heat being so intense here. The tips get dehydrated much faster than the rest of the plant.
When is your first market?
Week from tomorrow
I’m the only plant vendor, and it’s historically not been a plant event - but it’s hosted by/held at the plant store I used to work at. So it will be interesting to see what kind of crowd it draws.
I’ve only gone once and it was mostly food trucks, naturopathic stuff, and some craft vendors
Oooh exciting!
