Our beautiful London
I should go down to centre soon again. I love it there.
Not feeling the best but I had to get out this morning and visit some of the ships moored in the old docklands for Sail Amsterdam 2025, a 5-yearly tradition since 1975. It was worth it.
Very artisty. Beautiful vision @Tragicfarinelli

I have so many questions about this.
My hood in West London getting ready for carnival tomorrow!
The next two days will see TWO MILLION people visit my area for carnival. The roads are all closed and strategic tube stations get closed. There will be 50,000 performers and so many sound systems. Food and drink will flood the streets… by midnight, helicopters and sirens …..
This is just a snapshot of all the houses and businesses boarded up ready.
Each year I just hope it’s safe and happy. Living here is wild in August. ![]()

This is wild! I hope everyone has a wonderful time and enjoys the festival…above all is safe
I had forgotten about this and looked up what festival was happening in August ![]()
The August London carnival is the Notting Hill Carnival, a free annual street festival celebrating Caribbean culture in west London over the August bank holiday weekend, which in 2025 falls on August 23-25 The event features sound systems, music (soca, calypso, reggae), delicious food, and a large parade with elaborate costumes
So very cool…wish I could check it out.
It’s absolutely amazing in its purest form and intention. The floats are brilliant, the music banging, the vibe eclectic and so happy. It’s just in the evenings it gets a bit edgy. We usually have security detail in our building and car park. Apparently not this year….
The food is absolutely epic. You can get high just walking the pavement though, the weed use is astronomical. I might try and pop into it to get some pics, but honestly the police barricade the streets and then you get trapped and it can get a bit tiresome after 24 hours of nonstop partying.
Oh no - sorry about this - do hope that things stay safe and don’t get out of hand.
I can totally understand how overwhelming it all can be and worse when you feel closed in due to the barricades.
Living here, I kinda forget alot of people probably haven’t seen these before ![]()
It’s a drawbridge crossing the Erie Canal that lets boats pass under. There’s no way to know when it’s lifting until you pull up to this. You usually can tell how long you’ll wait by whether it’s going up, holding, or going back down. Except sometimes they raise it way too early for the boat or sometimes there’s multiple boats, so it’s not an exact science. The worst is when you don’t want to wait, but get trapped between 2 cars so you can’t turn around
You can drive to another bridge, but the closest ones on either side are both closed right now
(one being the only other drawbridge here that closed for construction when I was a kid and never reopened
), so you’d have to go a couple miles out of the way and might as well just wait.
Anything else you want to know?
I didn’t realize there was so much boat traffic on the canal! It winds though my old hometown, Akron, along the back of downtown. We have a drawbridge here on the northern portion of Lake Champlain to accommodate sailboats with tall masts - there’s no commercial boat traffic on the lake any more, hasn’t been for years. But once in a while, when I’m out that way on the islands, I have to wait for the bridge. The only other option is to head south 12 miles or so, or north about 6 miles (depending which side of the bridge you are on, of course!), cut over to the mainland and loop your way around like that.
Two years ago, on a fundraiser bike ride, we got stuck on the south side of the cut, the bridge was stuck open and they were waiting for the state Agency of Transportation to send someone to fix it. We waited only about an hour until they get it to close, and we resumed. It was right at the end of the ride - the starting/finishing point was only 50 yard north of the cut!
What a beautiful place.. i would totally be exploring all of those ships feeling the history.
One of my favorite places to be. A hidden little gem, just off the Tofino highway on Vancouver Island Canada. ![]()
