Replacing Alcohol with Food Advice Please

I’ve gained so much weight since quitting drinking and my binge eating is out of control. I’m in a tough situation. And I guess food feels like the only thing I have left. But I want to stop eating because it makes me feel like shit. I eat so much at once I have no energy left for the day and I do still have things I need to accomplish every day. For those of you that struggled with replacing alcohol with food, particularly binge eating, how did you concur it and maintain eating healthy portioned meals every day?

Still haven’t figured that out. However I’m still in relatively early recovery, so I’m giving myself some grace.

What kind of foods are you eating? My diets always been not too bad and I minimise the amount of treat foods I have in the house. If you eat meat have you tried cooking off things like chicken legs and thighs in bulk so you can keep them on the fridge and graze on those? Very filling and your getting a lot of protein through it as well

I’m sure plenty of us found ourselves latching on to food during our recovery . Something I found helpful is an app called “Lose It !”. The basic app is free. You set a weight loss goal. The app walks you through a clever menu to help you determine what is realistic for you. You can change your goal any time. Then you log what you eat and can also log exercise, and you can enter your weight as little or as often as you like. You can see how much of your intake is carbs, fats, protein, etc.
for me, personal and private accountability via the app was very helpful, and I found it gave me incentive to eat more responsibly and exercise more. There will be pop ups that offer upgrades which cost money, but you just click no thanks. Not that annoying.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

Eat a lot protein food chicken legs thigh …:poultry_leg: eggs lean beef and vegetable and fruit
I usually have white potato and sweet potato or capsicum ,brown rice ,greek yogurt with monk fruit sugar wish is almost 0 calories, rockmelon
When I tried to loose weight I focused not on eating less but eating nutritious and low calorie food and building muscle and I got results very quickly so don’t try to starve yourself because your body will adapt and slow your metabolism
Focus on eating clean food no sugar no oil or just a little bit of olive oil little bit of butter and exercise to build muscle
It’s just advice I hope I helped :slightly_smiling_face:

The more I read about addiction the more I realize that any addiction is trying to fill a hole and food was no different. I binged for 3-6 months probably before it stabilized. Keep digging at the root of the addiction and try to give yourself grace as you go. We beat our bodies up for so long that part of recovery (for me) was learning to tolerate myself and this body I walk around in. I liked a book called It Was Me All Along by Andie Mitchell. She had a line “contentment doesn’t double by the serving” I try to remind myself of that in all my addictive behaviors.

Thank you for all the advice. I started with 16:8 fasting which had helped me lose weight in the past. I was struggling to discipline myself enough to do it again and started with 10:14. However, the past few of days I was able to successfully do 16:8 has really helped my cravings for junk food so much. I still need to focus on healthy eating but it’s helped me not binge which feels so much better. Because on my first few weeks of sobriety I was eating so much at once I had to lay down after, it was an awful feeling. It’s also my 30 day birthday! So thankful for all the great advice, I’m going to use it to work on choosing healthier foods. Thank you!

When I stop drinking I tell myself I will give myself a grace period to get past the withdrawls but then Im hyper focusing on food and my diet intake almost to an unhealthy point. Im trying to increase gut healing foods. I splurge on sweets and caffeine a bit too much still haha but just remember we quit drinking to be better for ourselves and our bodies, we’ve already concurred a massive challenge, we can manage this one too!
