Reset my progress after realizing I had a sip of an alcoholic beverage

Hi everyone!

I’ve just had a sip of Kombucha my girlfriend offered me and I didn’t like it, told her it had grape-/wine-like taste. I checked the ingredients and was surprised to see it actually contained trace amounts of alcohol (0.6%).

It was nice knowing I instinctively reacted to the taste the way I have, but I’ve reset my progress, since even though it wasn’t exactly my fault, I don’t want to leave room for a sip of beer during summer, either (went a little over 107 days not having alcohol in my body anymore). My girlfriend is really beat up about it, though, saying she feels bad for not being more attentive when she sees how much I’ve struggled to start staying sober and how well I’ve done.

Can you share any insight about your own, similar occurrences?

Thanks and well, good luck on the path.

If you were truly unaware, then I see no reason to reset your timer. Additionally, kombucha isn’t really considered an alcoholic beverage by any stretch, the amount of alcohol in there is negligible. There’s probably “NA” beers out there that have more in it.

Welcome and congratulations on your achievement.
Based on the abv of what you sampled I would personally not count that as drinking at all. I believe there are many such as myself that drink kombatch, kefir etc and do not count this as consuming alcohol. However we all look at it in ways that work for us personally.
Good luck with your continuing sobriety.

It’s great you are setting your boundaries with Sobriety  I personally wouldn’t reset but that’s me and my views. Inevitably the number isn’t important, it’s the decisions you make every day that will keep you on the path of sobriety (or not). Congrats choosing what you feel is best for you and keep moving forward

My parents made a really weak blended margarita and I took the smallest sip for the taste. I didn’t reset my timer cause it stopped there and made no discernible difference to my cognition or decision making that night. Guilt free haha

Hi there! I personally wouldn’t reset as I wouldn’t consider it an alcoholic beverage. Although I do choose to drink kombucha myself in moderation (moderation due to sugar content, not alcohol). I don’t find it triggering at all, and am ok with non alcohol beer on very rare occasion (although I wasn’t a beer drinker). I eat fermented foods too. I don’t think you need to reset, but of course, totally up to you. And welcome to the forum!

I’ve never seen NA beers referred to as wrong (I assume by “wrong” you mean breaking sobriety?) on here. I’ve seen people advise against it because it mimics the real thing in terms of taste etc, but not because of the trace alcohol content. Personally I don’t touch it…not out of fear of toeing the line, but rather the taste just isn’t all that nice for me. Water is fine.

IDK, I generally avoid that debate either way. For me personally, though, I don’t see a sip of kombucha being remotely close to something that would warrant a reset. It’s negligible alcohol content, and on top of that, it was by mistake.

Welcome!! I appreciate your willingness to reset, but IMHO you don’t need to. You didn’t know and you stopped once you did. Totally up to you tho. I see a reset as an intentional use. But do what works best for YOU!

Many burger rolls have over 1% alcohol in them. For me the biggest part is the intent. I choose not to drink alcoholic beverages because it will get me drunk and my life is unmanageable. I also dont drink NA beer because i know that it would likely lead to the high test stuff. It all comes down to personal choice.

Welcome to the forum! Great that you’re being honest with yourself and you’ve reached out in here. Please don’t reset your counter though! You’ve done well to get to 100+ days and this doesn’t count as a “slip up”. Keep up the good work.

I regularly drink kombucha. That doesn’t seem like a reason to reset (unless you drink 10 of them). Especially if you didn’t know.

BUT…that’s up to you to decide. If you feel better to reset then hey, who am I to tell you you’re wrong. But if you’re wracked with guilt then I think you should give yourself a break.

Hugs
YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I agree with everyone else, a reset isn’t necessary. I met a woman at AA with over 20 years of sobriety that went to a party, asked for selzer, took a sip and realized it was mixed with alcohol. She didn’t reset because it wasn’t intentional. The decision to reset is up to the individual.

I would honestly say a reset isnt necessary. You had no idea there was alcohol in it. The intent to drink alcohol wasnt there. There was one night my husband and I were at a restaurants for supper. He ordered a soda and ordered orange juice (I LOVE orange juice). Well I took a sip of my drink only to realize it was a screwdriver. I was super upset about it and told the waitress. She had just grabbed it off the counter thinking it was hers when in fact it wasnt. Anyways, I didnt count that as a slip up. I was completely unaware of the alcohol. And I didnt continue drinking it after that 1 sip.

I also agree with what’s been said above. However, kombucha did make me fail a blow test while having ignition interlock in my car a couple years back. It was very very low, and I explained myself to my PO, and all consequences were swept under the table bc I had been good otherwise. But honestly youd have to drink 10 kombuchas in order to feel the same as 1 beer. The bottom line is it’s your prerogative with this situation. If you didn’t know, its 100% not your fault and the fact your girl does feel bad over it is great that she is supporting your efforts to stay sober. She was probably just trying to help get you healthier(as thats what kombucha claims to do). Keep going strong. I personally wouldn’t consider this a reset.
