My journey of sobriety only really started yesterday. My partner told me of a drug called Selincro which apparently closes off the part of the brain that causes pleasure when drinking alcohol. From what I’ve read/seen it reportedly has a 78% success rate. It was only approved here in the UK in 2016 and I didn’t personally know what it was until I was told about it yesterday.
Has anyone ever tried this drug before? Should I ask my doctor for it to help my recovery?
Yeah,I did research on Naltrexone and it works for majority of ppl in the way of not having cravings at all or very limited to the point if they actually drink ,they can’t even finish it because it just doesn’t do anything for them…try it!8))Good luck!!8)
Yep, it is the same as what we have here in the US…has anyone tried Naltrexone? From what I’ve read, for some reason it’s not covered by a lot of insurances here… yet another frustration about our health system and the overall view of addiction in America… very little to NO help other than AA.
Aetna is a good insurance. You may benefit from the meds, check what your insurance covers.I heard some ppl thrive on it,some don’t feel too well…you can start with the lowest dose and see…anything that could help,right??8)
Yes, but I’m really hesitant to take anything that might make me depressed (I’m on anti depressants)… but I’m willing to try anything if i start slipping!!!
I am on antidepressant as well…I have the craving meds at home but didn’t start taking it yet BC I don’t feel any cravings so far(I am only on day 18)…//I am not a big fan of medications either but sometimes its necessary I guess!!?Also there is a new thing called CBD oil(its a marijuana extract without giving you the high)and it has a LOT of health benefits, its used to treat a Lot of conditions… Do a research on that if u want OK??8)Stay strong!!8)
Hi, I’m taking campral which is meant to have a similar effect. Ive found it highly effective at stopping the cravings but it also needs the decision to stop… Definitely give whatever you can access a try… I’ve also read about baclofen which is supposed to work wonders… Also worth investigating if you get chance.
Thanks for all the replies, I’ve been googling the information I’ve been given and i am definitely going to get some Selincro just in case my horrible cravings get too much and I can’t quite control myself, although I hope I don’t get to that stage at all. Gotta keep going and keep trying!
When I was in the outpatient program every alcoholic in there was taking naltrexone and They couldn’t emphasize enough the fact that the side effects (if any) Will PASS. They were kinda gloomy at first but said they had about half the cravings to drink as before. Just a thought! It’s not for everyone obviously!
