Hey guys,

I dunno about you but my creativity was one of the first things to go once excess substances came along.

I think it’s a common misconception that we need drugs and alcohol to enhance our artistic abilities. I also have bipolar disorder and PTSD so me creative flows are very cyclic in nature.

Sometimes I write two thousand words, knit a whole scarf, paint an entire canvas, excel in my studies, or read an entire book in one sitting. I also enjoy cooking and photography and have taken a pottery lesson or two.

Other times I do nothing at all for weeks, months, or even years.

That said, I wanted to create a space where we can share what happens when we actively utilize the other side of our brain. Like sobriety, any creative endeavor requires practice and consistency.

What have you made lately?

Okay, I’m at the part of recovery where I’m finally returning to the oldest interest of mine, art. I thought I’d been “over it” prior to sobriety, but was very wrong.

It did take a while to get well enough mentally for me to reach this point and relax with a hobby.

It’s like returning to my oldest friend. I’m looking over a lot of unfinished really good ideas, thinking I’m gonna take a step further and commit to finishing a piece again for the first time in literally years.

Here’s a photo dump of just a few (there’s so many it’s my special interest lol)

There are more dark/graphic ones but obviously I’m leaving those out here lol

Thank you! It’s been a bit of a road to get back to the point where I’m comfortable just sitting down and working on something I’ve created. Addiction & mental illness took a lot of the wind out of my sails the longer it went on, so it’s such a provincial sign of progress in my book, to sweep off the dust and pick up where I left off.
I’ll definitely keep posting here with updates and such! Thanks again!

Iv been practicing the eylashes i just cant get the flow but il keep practicing its all for fun. Something i didnt ever have time for, but now it makes my brain work whilst giving it something to concentrate and learn instead of the chaotic chatter and negative thinking.
Thank you

There are enough examples on my “give me your eye” tread. Maybe that helps?
Sometimes is seeing more examples of the subject helpfull. I think there are less eye lashes in needed on the left of the eye.
I know I have not much lashes there

I have been freestyling it, and using you tube step by step draw with me vidoes that have been really helpfull.
Your right about now having a real life eye/face to sketch from.
After all my goal is to take a picture of my children and sketch it so it looks like its real. I know its a big challenge and will probably take a year or more but thats what i need something i can do that isnt over so quickly, something that needs full concentration and to learn.
I wasn’t sure id enjoy it but i just ordered a little kit and sat down and found i really benefit from it mentally too. I didnt know what i liked anymore, honestly im still figuring it out but its nice to have found reading and sketching and exercise so far - these seem to be my hobbies, where as all my life id never had any so im pretty proud for trying new things. Iv realised i have to get myself out my comfort zone and i enjoy challenging myself, where as i can easily talk myself out of everything too, slowly im getting there.
Thank you :hugs:

I work on my garage because the winters can be so harsh in Saskatchewan. I like to give myself something to inspire me to keep doing art. In this shot I am on the way to take my dogs to a field for an off leash run, and I remembered I need to finish that side so took the picture.

Love that work Fiarra! Hope you’ll show us the finished product too. On a side note, I’m a moderator here and I moved your post to this thread, a thread that is currently active on the forum. Hope that’s OK with you. And welcome to Talking Sober! Strength in numbers. Glad to have you aboard!
