Skin-picking (dermatillomania) NO JUDGMENT! BE KIND TO EACH OTHER!

I just started the app for OCD (skin-picking) also called Dermatillomania and I was wondering if there was anyone else out there using it for the same thing?
I already had to reset the sober timer after the first 5 minutes because I wasn’t paying attention and started picking. :broken_heart: On a good note, the second time around I’m on a little over 10 minutes! One step at a time!

EDIT: Yes, I am referring to any picking or hair pullers (dermatillomania, dermaphagia and trichotillomania). Thank you everyone, you’re so wonderful and accepting!

I struggle with nailbiting and biting the skin around my fingers, though I doubt the extend is comparable to dermatillomania

Didn’t know there was an app, I have been a compulsive skin picker since age 6. I don’t feel ready to use the app now because am still in early recovery from meth pills (Day 23) and want to focus on that. Also still have a few scabs from my relapse that will be difficult to leave alone.

My daughter is a hair puller. First time we noticed it she lost most of one eyebrow and one eyelashes. But then she seemed to stop and it all grew back. Then last year she started pulling the top of her head. We did get her to stop again and it’s FINALLY grown back enough to lay oat (instead of spiking). Clearly the issue is more than just boredom (which was our original thought). We’re trying to find her someone to assess her for an anxiety disorder and hopefully can get her some therapy and/or medication.

Picking at my thumbs becomes quite compulsive ( to fix the irregularity on skin) . I am ashamed of it and worried about it because they start bleeding and the social aspect. Thank you for the threads i can really relate. I do have a Skin Pick app that has journal entries which i will continue with.
Good luck with the awareness to catch yourself and i might try tapping as an alternative type meditation : )

Welcome to the forum. When I get anxious or stressed I completely destroy the skin around my fingernails, which is terrible for a piano player because then it hurts to play. I used to pull at my eyebrows as a child and young adult until I realized how detrimental it was for my looks.

I didn’t realize there was an app though. I’ll have to take a look. Thanks. :+1:
