I vote DFW. Great music scenes if you know where to look! Austin is too weird and that traffic is much worse than DFW! I avoid west Texas if at all possible. You could do a tour starting at DFW, drive down through the Hill Country (it’s gorgeous) to Austin and then hit San Antonio. Time it right and you would find a lot of festivals and have a blast! Plus the food…

It was such a great trip. It’s been about 5 hours drive by car for us to get there. Shame it’s so far. I’d definitely like to try out different routes (hopefully in better conditions)

Ah I’m only 90 minutes from there now, and it was the same distance when I was in Liverpool.

The dad of my best mate Rich had an outdoor pursuits business in Llanberis from the 70’s when we were kids until he retired. I spent a lot of time there.

Rich lived in Llanberis as an adult too and I’d stay over when we went hiking and fishing. He died of a heroin overdose over 5 years ago. A functioning addict most of the time, sometimes not so. It still breaks my heart. I tried to help him but you can’t always save people. I loved him like a brother.

I’ve been back hiking there a couple of times since but it somewhat hurts to visit now. Too many memories of over 40 yrs. So there you go.

I was stationed in San Antonio, one of my favorite places to be, there and San Diego.

If I ( talking about me personally) were to vacation in Texas I would go to the Big Bend area and hike in Big Bend National Park, or Big Bend Ranch State Park. ( Or Guadalupe Mountains National Park)
I would listen to the quiet.
And see some of the darkest skies in the world.
I would go when the daytime hi is between 50 and 60° November December January

Just be warned that these ACL festivals are drunk fests known for lots of partying, terrible traffic, high prices at local hotels and restaurants on top of some really amazing music. And it’s regularly still hot that time of year in Texas. Zilker Park is beautiful and the festival is definitely filled with amazing artists, vendors and such. But be prepared to spend a lot of money, do a lot of walking and standing and be surrounded by the usual crazy drunk people. Before this was well known, it was a great local music festival. Now it’s really blown up in the last 10-15 years. Proceed with caution. But if you go, you will most likely never forget it! @Fury

San Antonio is really a pretty part of the state. I prefer a little further north or in between San Antonio and Austin. I’m over crowded places these days!! I’m so old.
