Yep.
Whether it sounds better or not depends on many things. Scientifically, sure – digital music is composed of minute snippets of the recording. The greater the sample rate, the better the sound quality – but you still lose little tiny bits that you don’t lose with analog. Whether or not its actually discernable will vary.
I find that it comes down to recording/production quality, primarily – then the media format that was standard at the time of recording (meaning what type of format would people likely be hearing it on when first released, so how was the recording tailored to that), the style of music, how it was recorded to begin with (analog or digital), what masters were used to press the record, pressing plant, etc.
I’ve got some records that have a massive difference from digital. Others, no noticeable difference at all. I just like the experience of putting one on and directing all my attention to the music while I read the liner notes, look at the art, or read about how it was recorded. The “album” is an artform, a whole.
I can’t say how a hearing aid would influence it, that would actually be really interesting to know. My degree is in music technology, and the subject never came up!
Growing, we had a big huge wooden stereo cabinet. You’d push the top and lid opened and record player was inside. If I can manage to get home east (damn you, travel restrictions!) to pack up dad’s stuff, I’ll see if/what records are still in it. I’m sure there’s some pretty old stuff. If you like, I’ll take photos if so and see if you want me to ship you any! But likely dads old 50/60/70s records, if anything good. Might be nothing though. I’m keeping the Muppets Christmas with John Denver however
Those old console players are awesome. I love midcentury design and most of them are in that style too. I keep am eye out for ones here at estate sales etc.
Ummm thats the best stuff anyhow! I’ll take you up on that!
I can say that it takes some getting used to. When I hear a song I used to love, I mean I knew every note in my head, from back in the day, the first time I heard it with hearing aids, it just sounded “off”. However, anything I’ve only ever heard digital (CD, MP3) sounds the same as it always has.
