I was a lazy drunk with pretty good metabolism genes. I got heavy in sobriety, when I quit smoking and started eating. It’s been 11 years since I first darkened the doors of a fitness center, 10 years since my first 5k. I moved up in frequency and distance in races (missed one season with an Achilles injury), but I stagnated at 10k, I just can’t get up to the 13.3 miles. So I decided to try triathlon. I had done competitive swimming as a kid, wrestled a couple years in high school and that was the extent of my athleticism, unless you count drinking beer at softball games! Ooh, I was a champ at that!

In typical alcoholic fashion, I went from one sprint in my first year to 2 sprints to three. This year I’m doing the two sprints and an Oly. If a half Ironman didn’t include a half marathon, I’d be seriously thinking about that. May two Olys and a sprint next year. We’ll see. I’m staying sober today, doing my training today, going to sleep tired and waking up sober. That’s a good day, right there! :swimming_man::biking_man::running_man:
