Starting Over After a Slip

Today got the best of me. I’ve been carrying so much lately, and everything just seemed to hit me all at once. I made it one month and eight days without a drink, and I was so proud of that. But I gave in and had one.

I’m so disappointed in myself because I know that’s not the path I want to go back down. Right now I’m struggling with a lot of guilt and shame and I keep replaying it in my head. I know one mistake doesn’t erase the progress I made but it’s hard not to feel like I let myself down.

If you’ve been where I am, I’d really appreciate hearing from you. If you have any encouragement or advice, I could really use it right now. Please remind me that one bad decision doesn’t have to become a bad tomorrow. I don’t want this to be the beginning of going backward I want it to be the moment I pick myself back up, learn from it, and keep moving forward. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to respond. It truly means more than you know.

This can very quickly turn into a full blown relapse which you may never come back from, or it can be a bump in the road and a lesson. It’s honestly up to you. The positive news is you chose to come here and talk about it.

Sure, your counter may reset but your progress isn’t lost. You still have the tools and knowledge you’ve acquired.

Thank you so much the both of you!! I really needed to hear this today you honestly have no idea. I was so proud of making it one month and some more by my self! I let one bad moment convince me I’d ruined everything. Your reminder that my progress isn’t erased and that I still have the tools I’ve learned means more than you know. I’m choosing to make this a lesson, not a relapse!! I’m resetting and giving myself some grace as I feel anyone deserves! Taking it one day at a time. Thank you for welcoming me and reminding me I don’t have to do this alone. I also start a three day a week outpatient program next week.. I’m a little nervous about it, but I know I’ll be okay! I just get so wrapped up in my head about people judging me. This is the first step that I have taken to better myself.

You had to reset your timer but your month+ sobriety is not swept away. You did it once and you can do it again. I think it’s good the drink you had stings. Your emotions show it’s a way you don’t want to go back. The choice is yours. You don’t have to repeat your old patterns.

Welcome here. This community is supportive and there’s people online around the clock. You might also want to consider other forms of support like meetings.
