A program of recovery can help with this. Life isnt always sunshine and rainbows, there will be bad days. A recovery program can help you develop coping mechanisms.

Day 9 and 10

Medication: 0mg yesterday, 40mg lioresal today(Baclofen)
Cravings: 0/10 (alcohol is goodā€¦for cleaning and to desinfect the hands)
Feeling: :ok:
Sober: Yes

Ten days down, double digitsšŸ˜ƒVery interessting, in my last post i wrote that i wanted to drink, but i took the medicine. Then, after a few minutes, the craving was gone. In the evening, i went to the darts local for the training. All the people drank, and the boss of the local offered a free spirit glass to all the guests. I refused without beeing triggered and gave it to my smilling teammate. This is absolutely unbelievable, to weeks ago this day would had ended with a massive binge for sure! Which means: It works!

Yesterday i had an appointment at my doc and because there are no cravings, but strong side effects, we decided to dose down until the cravings come back. So the next weeks will be exiting and a bit dangerous. But it seems, after all, im near to the finish linešŸ˜ƒ

This is a horribly irresponsible thread.

I hope everyone will mute it, like I will. Whether you want to wiggle with semantics or not, you are encouraging use of a substance, with 100% unknown consequence.

ā€œBaclofen is used to treat pain and certain types of spasticity (muscle stiffness and tightness) from multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, or other spinal cord diseases. Baclofen is in a class of medications called skeletal muscle relaxants. Baclofen acts on the spinal cord nerves and decreases the number and severity of muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis or spinal cord conditions. It also relieves pain and improves muscle movement.ā€

This isnā€™t a lab, or a hospital. This should be kept between you and your doctor (who should probably be investigated) and in a private journal.

Just curious, whatā€™s the ā€œfinish lineā€ for you? Do you only take the Baclofen for a certain period of time?

Good work on 10 days

The finish line is the moment where i found the dose with which you dont have cravings and also no side effects anymore. Later, there are two options: Some people take their dose lifelong (like the founder) or stop taking the medication slowly. But this is only the first part, the second is to change the lifestyle, of course.

@EarnIt The therapy is not forbidden in my country, and in France, Baclofen is even an officially medication against alcoholism. And it works. I dont know what your problem is, if youre not interest to learn something about my way (and million other btw), so then just ignore this thread and going your own way. Thank you

I hope the withdrawals from baclofen wonā€™t suckā€¦

There are no withdrawals with baclofen, if you slowly reduce it over 2-3 weeks

10 Days down FolksšŸŽ‰

Congrats on 10 days The Power. Iā€™m a RN mental health nurse and I am schooled in how to look for (scientific) evidence. And how to rate it. Iā€™ve been looking around a bit.

Most interesting I found is the Cagliari Statement, a declaration written by a big group of medical specialists who all are interested in the use of Baclofen for AUD treatment, both supporters and non-supporters of its use. In 2018 they came up with recommendations to follow when Baclofen is used. You can find it here: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(18)30303-1/fulltext
You do need a free subscription tot the Lancet to read it, so here are some of the most interesting (IMHO) recommendations from this statement:

2
Pharmacotherapy is only one component of the treatment of moderate-to-severe alcohol use disorder. Patient-centred individualised treatment plans should be used. These plans should also include psychotherapy, in-person or web-based treatments, and community and peer support groups.
7
Baclofen should be considered a second-line pharmacotherapy in patients who have not responded to approved pharmacological treatments for alcohol use disorder. However, the off-label use of baclofen may be considered among first-line pharmacological treatments in patients with contraindication to approved medications (eg, patients with advanced liver disease for whom the use of disulfiram or naltrexone may be contraindicated).
10
Baclofen should be started at a low dose (5 mg three times per day) and slowly titrated upwards (eg, 5ā€“10 mg per day, every three days) to minimise possible side-effects, including sedation and overdose.
16
Particular caution is needed for the combination of baclofen with other sedative medications (including alcohol) since there are additive side-effects (eg, sedation, drowsiness, and somnolence).
17
Particular caution is needed among patients with alcohol use disorder and other comorbidities, such as patients with a history of epilepsy, because baclofen can lower the seizure threshold, patients with mood disorders, because baclofen can increase the risk of hypomanic and manic episodes, and patients with suicidal ideation or a history of suicide attempts, because of the risk of intentional overdose.
18
Treatment with baclofen should not be abruptly interrupted to avoid the risk of withdrawal symptoms. The daily dose should be slowly reduced (eg, 5ā€“10 mg per week).

So all this got me worried in the way you describe how you are doing it right now. Please take care. A couple of points I noticed from you posts:

But you already took the risk of skipping it one day (day 9). And you are messing around with the dosage on a day to day basis. What does your doctor say about that? To me it doesnā€™t sound like something a doctor would agree to. Especially after reading recommendations 10 and 18 from the statement above.

This is heavy medication. with loads of potential side effects and toxic properties, danger of overdosing, of serious withdrawals effects. Doesnā€™t sound like a great deal to me, to stop drinking and then have to take this stuff for the rest of your life. Iā€™m happy to be sober and medication free. But your or anybodyā€™s choice of course.

I think @earnit is worried. I am too. France is the only country in the world where Baclofen is an offical treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder. You talk about a million peopleā€™s way. Earlier in the thread you talk about thousands. Where you get this numbers please?

Iā€™m honestly worried for your health and anybodyā€™s who would take this same route. To me it seems your doctor hasnā€™t read the Cagliari Statement. Right now the evidence for the efficacy of Baclofen in use for UAD treatment is flimsy to say the least. Hereā€™s two more freely available articles which discuss the most recent findings in scientific research. I wish you all success. Sorry for all the text.

I simply want to say that this is an outstanding contribution.

Nothing to worry, all good. I just had the problem at day 9 that i didnt had some baclofen anymore, because my pharmacy had no more lioresal on stock. Not perfect, but i read that there are no wirhdrawals expected while the first 2-3 months, so i just waited for the next delivery today. Shit happens. And yeah, i admit, i didnt told the doc. My bad.

Second: I started dosing up at september 7 with 5mg and now, after a week on 50mg with side effects, the doc said i should going down on 40. This is not a high dosage, there are people with 300ā€¦But ok, i should have write down the whole way, but i came later to ts than i started taking baclofen.

Third, millions was wrong, thousends are right. There are estimations in France that 50-100k people are taking baclofen against alcoholism (based on the sales figures).

But this are details, the most important thing is: Iā€™m sober. And i have nearly no cravings. And thats everything that counts.

To the healty risks: Okay, baclofen may have some risks, but: Do you know the feeling after drinking of 8 litres of beer? How toxic is this? I guess much more than 40 or 50 mg Baclofen, right? Im deeply convinced, Baclofen saves lifes!

But i really thank you for your contribution, as more information the people get, than better.

I am not going to comment on whether it may or may not help with alcoholism. I will only say my mum took baclofen for ms, and when she drank alcohol the effect was x10. Hopefully u wonā€™t drink on it. But just keep it in mind.

I thought whiskey was too much, so I ā€œjust drank beer.ā€ But then it was 8 liters of beer. When that was too much I drank only wine, but then it was 2 or three bottles of wine.

The pills? I do not know, but they may be potent. And when it comes to substances Iā€™m prone to always wanting more to feel better. So itā€™s easy to feel concerned.

Iā€™m not against medically/medicinally assisted recovery. Surely it has saved lives. I had some pills to prevent seizure for one assisted withdrawal. Perhaps this is something new.

But it is so important people stay focused on honest conversation with their doctor about it then, and as addicts not experiment with it alone. Iā€™m trusting that you do so and glad that youā€™re sober. But still worry your posts may encourage others to experiment on their own, you know?

All what i want to do is to show my own journey here. And i mentioned that people should only do the baclofen therapy under medical supervision (Disclaimer, Post 1 and in other posts too). But i do it again: People, donā€™t do this by your own, it could be dangerous!

P.s Changed 4-5 pills to 40 to 50 mg baclofen to avoid misunderstandings.

P.P.S Sorry that you know the ā€œ8-litre-beer-feelingā€, hope you are fine right now
