My brother is an alcoholic. A bad one. And he doesnt admit to it nor does he acknowledge it unless he is messed up.
Kid is 24 years old and drinks Jim Beam daily. His famous line is “I only had two drinks”, but the part he leaves out is the fact that they are probably 3 to 4 shots each. He thinks he can hide it, he cant. He ends up belligerent and angry and lashes out at everyone. Only to follow up with “I’m sorry” and full on pout mode. He has had me a nervous wreck for a long time because I’m scared he’s going to hurt himself or someone else. He’s been lucky a couple of times, but luck runs out.
Today he scared thr shit out of me. We were supposed to workout this morning. I’ve been trying to get him to do things like that with me to keep him away from drinking. But when I woke up I saw snapchats of him messed up at the bar around closing time, and figured out he was hanging with the wrong crowd. So I didn’t call him this morning. Then around 5:30pm my dad and I got nervous and called and no answer. So I messaged one of his friends who said he was out of control that morning, and the friend had dropped him off home. Dad and I proceeded to go to his apartment where we found him passed out on the couch still in his jacket, hat, and boots from this morning/the night before. I could barely wake him up, and when he did finally wake up he was still hammered. This was many hours after he’d quit drinking. So he was a complete asshole and I told him some hard truths and left. 10 minutes later he called with the I’m sorry routine. I told him to prove he was sorry by helping himself. He is okay thankfully but I’m honestly not sure how he didnt have alcohol poisoning. He’s feeling rough tonight, but my dad is watching him so that makes me feel better.
One of the hardest parts about this is the fact that 99 percent of the pressure to take care of him falls on me. And I feel like I’m obligated to do it, but then my stress level is off the charts while everyome else just pushes everything off. I have already lost one brother, and I’m often scared I’m going to lose another. This is a routine he goes through over and over. He says he wants help but he doesn’t take it seriously. Im kind of lost at what to do. I’m hoping today was a wake up call as I’m sure he will be feeling awful after the amount of alcohol he consumed. But I don’t know if it will be enough.
Sorry for the long post, just needed to blow off a little steam.
Maybe try an Al-Anon meeting - it’s a support group for people impacted by others’ alcohol/drug use. Hoping you can learn to find some serenity and peace.

Sadly family or not you cant control his life or force him to get sober. He obviously is in that stage of denial and not ready. Dont make ur recovery suffer from helpping others …then its time to back off some and focus on you. I know its your brother and you love him and want him to be safe and alive. You dont have that power unfortunately. Only he does. Even who he hangs out with or lets drive him while drunk. You can only help open his eyes and set an example. My father just had triple by-pass surgery and coded in the middle of it and they were only able to do two. He was a vegetable for weeks but luckily he was able to come off the ventilator and start recovering. It almost took his life and he didnt see what i did and hardly remembers it. He continues to smoke and drink like a fish every day with no care to die. Sometimes i feel he wants to. There is no way i can control him and hes going to live the life he wants. Yes i would have been much happier if he stayed sober after he recovered . Unfortunately he has not and i just sit back and watch him be a misserable drunk day in and day out…
Good news this week. Monday he went in for an evaluation and he is participating in extensive outpatient treatment. One step at a time.
That’s really good to hear…I didn’t realize your post was from a couple days ago. That sounds like such a scary thing you went through and it sounds like you’ve been dealing with things like that with him for a while. I’m really sorry. I know how that feels, that feeling where you want to help someone so badly but they are blind to their actions… It’s such a helpless feeling. And him hurting himself or others, that’s a hard one to handle.
I really hope your brother goes in the right direction. And I’m very sorry for the loss of your other brother.
Awesome news! Yes one step at a time!
