I’m reading The Sum of Us. Really good book about the economic costs to white people of US racism, and analysis of why this country has so many people voting against self interest. It uses the haunting image of public pools filled in, because people chose no pool for anyone over an integrated pool.
Good books I’ve read recently:
—a promised land
— passing
— o Antonia
— klara and the sun, wonderful book
— the Blue Place trilogy
I listened to the audio of this one (because…Will Wheaton!!) and no, it wasn’t as good. But, without spoiling it, there was one part that I just loved. I guess we all have our own 80s obsessions…and video games is not mine. I found all the gaming and game references totally lame and boring. LOL
Agree that this one is bogging itself down in unnecessary references - it’s trying too hard and reader engagement and interest is suffering as a result. I’ve slowed down on this one but will pick up the pace once more so you can share your favourite part
I finished my bachelors degree (at age 48 - better late than never) in December. Went back six years ago and slowly chipped away with two classes a semester.
Now that it’s done I can finally read for pleasure again!
Michel Houellebecq, “Serotonin”
Should’ve chosen something lighter, perhaps, but it’s reading smoothly, although the theme (themes) is a very serious one.
My local library subscribes to Libby. Which is a platform like kindle with ebooks that you can read for Free.
I still often have a book in my hand, but if there is something you want to read and not own that’s a cool option.
This is one of my Favorite books. Jordan Peterson has definitely steered me on my path to get clean. I re read parts of it whenever I need to improve my life.
That sounds like a good option but I’m a hard copy kinda gal. I love reading physical books because it keeps me off a technology device and its just not enjoyable for me to read a book off a screen. I’ve tried but it just dosnt reasonte the same. Also I’m an avid book display lover with but being aesthetically pleasing to fill my book shelfs at home because it makes it much more cozy and homely I also love giving away books when u feel that the universe guides me to pass on any that I feel align with another thank you for the recommendation though
I just read The Biggest Bluff, about poker and paying attention and skill vs luck. A total page turner and lots of great life lessons. Highly recommend.
There are so many books and authors on this thread that I actively dislike! But I guess that’s all the more reason to be grateful that there’s something out there for everyone.
Ok, @VSue, finally finished Ready Player 2, though more out of obligation than joy.
There was one particular moment that genuinely made me chuckle, and I wish the story had more moments like this.
This was my favourite bit:
*“One-two princes kneel before you,” he sang, while failing to suppress his synaptic-overload-induced laughter. “Princes! Princes who adore you!” * A horrified look crossed Aech’s face, and she threw her head back to study the sky. A split second later, a purple lightning bolt descended from it and struck Shoto, killing him instantly.
I was getting so frustrated with this society that spends so much time on line and playing video games. Then they went to John Hughes land. I giggled the whole time in that chapter. The high school with all the various halls dedicated to different movies made me laugh. But the best part was RDJ as Ducky. They made some comment about how not many people knew he almost played the role and I said out loud, all alone, on my walk (I was listening to audiobook) “I KNEW!!”. LOL. Fortunately no one heard me. But that whole world with all the different movies was clearly my nerd thing.
The Prince world was pretty cool but went on too long.
“Sing Backwards and Weep” by Mark Lanegan. Autobiography from the singer of Screaming Trees and various other bands. Really shows the dark and scary side of addiction and makes me glad I made the decision to get sober. Also some great history and anecdotes about the 90s Seattle music scene. Highly recommend.
I love to read but have been having a hard time getting into a book. I’ve tried a few. Rereading an old fave from about 15 years ago. Christopher Moore has a unique special type of humor.
Enjoying it so far. I don’t remember most of it.
