Any Avid Readers Here? What are you currently reading?

I’m listening to the audiobook, “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R. R. Martin. The British actor who is reading it (Roy Dotrice) is amazing. You can actually HEAR the difference between the things a person tells and those that he thinks at the moment.
Usually, I prefer reading in Italian, but I got used to listening to audiobooks for a couple of hours.
Lately, before bed, I’m reading these cosy mysteries by Martha Grimes (Richard Jury series).
Also lately - in the past few weeks - I’m ashamed to say I didn’t have time nor concentration to read anything apart from the articles and short stories that I have to read and analyze for my Italian literature classes.
Hopefully I’ll continue reading Gogol’s “Dead Souls” (in my language, which is one of Slavic languages, as I find that the translations can make you really feel the essence of a Russian clasic better than the translations in English or Italian… or it’s just my opinion).

The World According to Garp is a fantastic book (very good movie, as is Cider House)…but his books are so much more than the movies. Oh Garp. I just re read Cider House. As a Mainer, single teenage unwed Mom back when…hit a lot of feelings…as his books (older work especially) have for me.

He has a way with words for sure…and grief.

I missed that he said this last one was his last @Soberbilly. It is on the list.

I am currently on book 5 of the Game of Thrones series. I only caught the TV series in bits and pieces when my fiance was watching episodes, so aside from being familiar with some characters, the series was all new to me. This is the most reading I have done in so many years and it feels so good to be back with a book in my hand.

Do you guys prefer a physical book or an E-book?

Also, this book is absolutely amazing. I read it in 2 days and think about it often.

I thought I would never get used to ebooks. But, our posts being lousy (lost packages, items that arrive months later than they should etc.), I begun ordering ebooks every now and then, though I have a fairly large library at home and a lot of books I should read.
But I do prefer a “real” book, for the same reasons I guess everyone cites: the feeling of paper on your fingertips, the sound of pages turning, the smell and, basically, the act of reading as a ritual.
But I enjoy ebooks almost just the same.

Someone posted about this book on here and I picked it up on kindle. Reading currently and seems to be a great book of advice and encouragement.

I took a lot from that one as well!!

@Sarahann, I agree, such an amazing book!!!

@LuluOnTheBridge, I read the bulk of novels on my Kindle (usually free from the library if they have it), especially good for traveling. I was very happy years ago when I traveled a lot not to have to pack 10 books in my luggage anymore.

I buy used the books I want to hold and savor and come back to. Nothing quite like an old thumbed through paperback with that old book (mold?) smell. :books:

I am glad there are so many books to discover. :purple_heart:

Love his books!!

About halfway through Demon Copperhead. Saw how many of you suggested it and figured I would give it a go. Totally worth it! Such awesome storytelling and great characters.

I finally stopped fucking with Lessons. Thank god.

I liked The Terranauts via audio ok. Again found it a little wooden and overwrought seeming w the characters and plot, like the other I read by him. I don’t think I would have finished reading it.

I am almost done with Babysitter by Joyce Carol Oates. She really has a knack for making things weird gradually and keeping me interested in the weirdness for a long time. I tend to get turned off when things seem too strange or twisted, artificial, like a distortion lense put on. But she manages to keep the prose and the characters very much alive.

Now this one I am really fully enjoying to the point where I’m going to buy his other books straight away.

The prose is like water but sharp and breath giving. Every single image and sensory description is spot on. Incredible. Fangirl stuff.

Just finished this short … I think the blurb by Hilary Mantel sums it nicely
…’ Every word is the right word in the right place, and the effect is resonant and deeply moving.’

Same, my favorite author hands down. Loved this one that he wrote with his son, very good read. Just ordered Fairy Tale and I can’t wait to read it.
