Huge Stephen King fan. What I used to escape before alcohol came around. Currently reading “You Like it Darker”.
I am as well, I am from Maine and was in high school when he was starting out. HUGE fan!! I love his old stuff.
Have you read his non fiction, “On Writing”? He talks about battling his addictions + writing.
Fun fact, I found his wife, Tabitha King’s, black AmEx card in the parking lot of the Oxford, Maine Walmart! They shopped there when passing thru to home. Loved her books too.
From Maine!? You must feel right at home in most of his books. I did read that years ago (I own most of his stuff) and should probably pick it up again.
Thats a great story! So did you get to meet her? I haven’t read any of her or their son’s books yet although I keep meaning to.
I do feel at home in his old stuff. Even more so with Carolyn Chute’s, The Beans of Egypt Maine…gritty and sadly realistic.
I did not meet Tabitha, I turned the card in to the Manager for them to deal with. They said the Kings had been in recently, so she would likely show up again. It is a small town / area.
I was in high school when Salem’s Lot came out and I slept with a cross for months. It was crazy scary back then.
Re-reading the classic. I’ve been since high school interested of rastafarians, it’s really fascinating way of life.
Ah, it’s been a while since I read and taught Chute.
I love her work.
This is my little library right now. This is what I’ve purchased and read in the last 14 months. I am currently rereading the technical analysis trading book. I will be pursuing a Degree in Finance most likely or possibly computer programming. About a year ago I became interested in learning about money and what exactly it is, different forms of investing, understanding budgeting and mostly it’s because I actually had money and I had to start understanding what I had coming in and what I had going out. How can I make money when I sleep? Can I really understand and learn the market? That sort of thing.. It’s exciting learning something new that actually clicks in my head and I’m understanding and retaining information. Making notes and dedicating time to study. But I understand I’m a Beginner. What’s crazy is that if you saw my library a couple years ago it would’ve been Charles Bukowski, Jack Kerouac, and William S Burroughs.. Beat writers that glorified alcohol and drug lifestyles. But I’ve been there done that. I’m not necessarily interested in fiction right now. What’s cool is that I am respecting my belongings and I know that I’m going to hold onto these books and I’m not going to have to sell them for drugs or alcohol. Really because of the first book in that collection. The big book comes before all other books. Without reading the big book I will have nothing guaranteed.
Hahaha. I think I was 10 when the movie came out. I was terrified! I watched it a few years ago and… was not terrified Special effects have definitely come a long way.
As with most of the movies based on his works, the book was much better.
One of my favs is The Long Walk (written as Richard Bachman).
I’ll have to read that!
Love the Long Walk.
Last night while reading one of the stories in “You Like it Darker”, I came across a term “Arithmomania”. I had never heard that before. The description of it is something I do regularly and have always done. Anyone else familiar?
I had to look it up as well. I don’t have that urge tho. I hope you find it comforting.
No, I just find myself doing it. Wish I didn’t at all. Anyways, back to books!
This took some getting through, half an hour left.
Not my favourite listen. Its was a bit like pulling teeth.
Something for the mystery/fantasy audiobook listeners. It’s a podcast series of short stories. I discovered it by accident and I am loving it! The narrator has the most beautiful Scottish accent I’ve ever heard
It’s also available on various streaming platforms. I listen on Spotify.
Thanks, Im going to give this a go tomorrow. I like short stories inbetween my long listens.
It’s all about the same girl working in the antique shop, but each episode has its own individual storyline. I like that. It’s easy to listen to a full story, but get to know the characters better and better over time. The episodes seem to get longer though.
