But so darn easy…I probably derailed more threads when I first got here…completely unintentionally…just found my gift for gabby here…we needed this thread 4 years ago!
Just another example of Churchill’s apt saying the US and UK are “two nations divided by a common language”. Usage of the “c-word” can get your eyes clawed out in the US.
It’s fairly common here in Australia but does not carry the sort of eye-clawing insult status of parts of America.
I mostly use it here because it’s @Dazercat’s favourite word and want to see him smile.
Yeah when I read a clockwork orange, the book I got had a appendix to decipher the UK slang to us understanding
That’s when I learned in the UK and other English speaking countries the C word can mean friend or foe depending on context,
Where as here the c word will likely have your eyes clawed out
Interesting the power you decide to give a little word.
Are you guys talking about “capitalism”
No I think maybe capricious
Ah, I allready missed the context in this conversation… I thought we were talking cookies
To be honest as a french citizen I had to check on google to be sure about what is that C word
Always cookies with you.
Hi, Fargesia. How are you today? I missed the notification of your reply until I was cleaning out my inbox. Sorry.
So to reply to your questions: 1) I am unfamiliar with acceptance and commitment therapy and I am not a licensed mental health professional. I think you can get a better answer from one of them. 2) Recovery means you are working on a daily basis a recovery program. Usually it means you have received services that have assisted you in getting well. Such as substance use disorder services. But some are using their religion or other spiritual based program (like AA, CA, etc.) for their recovery program. ASAM states in their authoritative text that the only common denominator they found among persons who remained abstinent past the 2 year milestone was participation in a 12 Step or other spiritual based program. So if you are well and you are not using this type of program and you have stayed well and off all mind altering substances (including things like Nicotine) for more than let us say ten years, you may not have a substance use disorder but some other issue such as a mental health disorder where you are treating the symptoms with mind altering substances. I have stated facts above about ASAM findings. Terrence Gorski made the same findings and he is one of the foremost experts on alcoholism and addiction and relapse prevention. You can make your own choices, it is not up to me or someone else. I am stating what the facts are in terms of longitudinal studies.
I cannot comment on your last comment because it is more argumentative than factual.
Don’t we all ?
None of us got addicted just for the fun of it.
As for the rest : let’s agree to disagree.
You remind me of a psychologist who tried telling me my experience and perception of myself were wrong, because some books said that couldn’t be me
If texts about people and those people themselves seem to disagree, rely on people themselves.
We are all experts about our own lives.
I’m a big fan of it.
However, I almost never use it as an actual insult towards someone. Usually it’s when doing manual labor as a phrase of exasperation (thanks, Dad). Figure it’s him being from Ireland and having influenced my way of speaking.
I feel it’s really the only curse word left with any sort of “oomph” to it. Use sparingly.
So… what you guys do in here? Is this like Facebook for addicts? Maybe I got the wrong perception or maybe the site is not being used as it’s supposed to cause I remember reading the “about” part🤷♂️
Keep it polite boys, girls and everything in between.
