Gardening In Recovery

@Soli Well, the plant should be growable on a stone wall  Daffodils don’t grow on stone walls, they need soil. But I will plant some bulbs in autumn for you near it. Another one?
Thinking about plants is always making me happy, I’m grateful it makes you happy too

@SoberWalker I will do, and I will go haunting your special variety. It’s such a lovely idea to bring a small fern from an old building to a new wall.

@TrustyBird OMG you built a catio paradise! I echo everyone, I wanna be cat at your’s

The catnet / climbing net for peas is up on its final hight. I love it when little worksteps add up to a finish :+1:

This past month we have finally begun some projects to transform our boring lawn into a lovely garden. We started by moving two giant white globe hydrangeas from in front of the house to the back next to the fence. We are trying to create a bit of a visual barrier against that chain link. We also moved two clumps of tall grasses, split each in two and transplanted them there, as well. It was a helluva job as the root balls were huge and the grasses probably have never been split - we had to saw through the root ball! The hydrangeas are growing well and leafing out, and the grasses are showing new growth, too, since these initial pics.

Busy day today, part of which included digging up the peonies and lilies my parents brought us from their garden last fall. They overwintered in a compost pile and sprouted and thrived there just fine (compost pile also a temporary situation, we are going to build a compost bin at the end of that wall). I dug them up and divided them into nursery pots, then dug up some of the compost and added it to a bunch of garden soil in a separate large tub. Let me just say that whoever thought of auger attachments for drills was a genius! It really makes mixing soils or breaking up compost super easy. Chose my spots for the peonies on each side of the back gate so we can see them from the patio and dug the holes deep enough to amend the soil with new dirt. I am excited to see how much they grow this year. A couple of them have tiny buds but I don’t think they will develop this season, hopefully next year! We’ll transplant the lilies tomorrow, mostly out in front of the house in the flower bed there but maybe one chunk in back to enjoy seeing more often.

Day lilies and hostas are in the ground! Next up is mulch, hopefully tomorrow. I’ll also probably plant some annuals in between. I have a spot on the left corner of the house for a larger bush or something, I’ll have to start shopping around and decide what I want. I also plan to rent a sod cutter to extend this flower bed out in a half moon shape as opposed to the straight edge. Fun stuff!

One chunk in a corner of the backyard.

Empty corner needs something cool! No clue what, yet.

Might start checking out the gardening thread. I’m inheriting a massive California garden at my new home. I’m all excited. But it’s also a bit overwhelming. I’m keeping the guy and his team on that have been maintaining it for the previous owners. It’s too much for me.

Anyway. First pic.
@Butterflymoonwoman
I got a Butterfly Bush :butterfly:

It’s suppose to attract butterflies. Gonna be like having you in my back yard :kissing_heart:

Hopefully I will be taking it slow. But I’ll need to get some plants for the deck and other places. And I’ve always wanted to plant herbs. I hate going to the store for a tablespoon of fresh parsley. Or basil.

And I want to plant a potted lemon tree. I have some citrus trees but they don’t look all that good. They didn’t plant them in enough sun. I think. I don’t know shit yet.

I got an orange tree that had tiny little green fruits on it. I thought it was a lime tree. He said it was orange tree. But the other citrus look a bit rough.

Good thing you’re moving or I’d help you burn the place down. That monster was scary looking! Be on high alert in your final moments there.

Trust me, this is only the beginning! I just needed to get these in the ground. I can’t wait to fill things in and get some wild going on. Too bad about the deer. We have them around and I’m holding my breath because they love hostas…I hope they stick to the areas behind my house! I’ll have to ask my next door neighbors, who had a lovely large garden and border the woods, whether they have had issues with deer.

I will definitely be putting in a butterfly bush or two somewhere. I have always loved lilacs, Rose of Sharon, forsythia, and other flowering bushes, too. I need a trip to a big nursery and a wander around. I also need to take a wander around our very lovely arboretum and botanical gardens for inspiration.

My husband brought this home today as a gift for our 17th wedding anniversary, he saw me admiring them recently. Good man! I do love Gerbera daisies and this variety is new to me. I may go pick up a couple more colors and plant them together somewhere.

Lots of lilacs!!! They are so marvelous!! Deer do love hosta, tho they never bothered ours in VT. I can’t wait to see what you do!!

There are so many lilacs in my neighborhood flowering right now that my morning walk with Lupe always smells sweet. That does make me want my own. We used to live in a house where the neighbors’ lilac bush would be so fragrant that I could smell it from our bedroom windows, and that corner is right by our bedroom…I think that might just clinch it for me!

They are amazing. I had a beautiful old stand of them around my 1st house…it was an old converted schoolhouse. It was magical. I would find people clipping them every now and again. Of all the scents I miss, lilac is probably the biggest. They are everywhere in New England.

Wildflower mix and some peppermint sprouting. Last year I planted veggies and spent way too much time watering them. This year I went with flowers and am sitting farther back just to watch. This feels like a metaphor for my second year of sobriety.

I transplanted my mint plant that sprang up from nothing (seemingly) and it’s out front now. Also planted the daisies. I like how they look next to the hummingbird feeder, which is the setting for a dramatic show every day now, hummingbirds are no joke, they are vicious! The chives are blooming and the lilies that came with the house are showing buds. I love this time of year.
