My daughter was tasked with making a gratitude list for school, we spoke about it.
I explained that how a lot of the world lives in deep poverty where you would have entire families living in a dirty shack the size of our bathroom.

  1. We’re thankful we have food to eat.
  2. Clean water to drink.
  3. School to go to and express ourselves there.
  4. Modern technology that allows us to stay in touch.
  5. A comfortable and safe space to go to at the end of each Day.

I first came across the concept of a gratitude journal one day watching Oprah over 25 years ago.

This concept was still in its infancy and I was quite excited about it. It’s been years now since I last kept a gratitude journal (something I intend to remedy now that I’m working on my sobriety). Life got in the way, alcohol too, and I never seemed to have the time or inclination to perservere despite having much to be grateful for. I’m glad I’m here and found this thread.

I am grateful today for:

The love, companionship and support of my hubby.

I have much to be grateful for.

I’m grateful for this thread, and for the supportive community on Sober Time.

This weekend was a huge revelation of how people do this thing called sobriety
My wife and i were at the restaurant and i told our waitress that i didn’t want any more soda as I’ve had my limit of two for the day
About 30 minutes passed and she came up to me and said
Sir i want to know how you were able to that
At first, i thought i did something that was really offensive
She said, how do you just tell me you’ve had your limit
She says that she was going on 90 days being sober and that she was really struggling.
In fact her question to me was how do i have the ability to just say no and that i had my limit
She wants to know how do i know my limits

I put my fork down and we spoke.
I told her that i have 22 years sober
I suggest to her, and i suggest to who over read this
The way you asked me how to do it, the way i share with you. I told her that i was really proud of her sharing her sobriety with me. She took a huge chance and risked putting herself out there by telling me she’s a newly sober person
The way you share WITH ME is HOW YOU DO IT
Just do it. Don’t worry about tomorrow.
Set your limit
Respect the limit
Don’t test the limit
I haven’t been sober this long WITHOUT respecting the limits set by ME or OTHERS

It only gets better

Then, my wife asks me, how is it that people come up to you and tell you that they are sober when you don’t even ask

I said, bravery. They took a chance.

So, i share with you, everyone here
Take a chance with yourself. As i have taken a chance with myself.
It’s worth the risk
I’m worth the risk
