I keep trying & failing to quit for good. I feel like I need a sponsor, someone I can call when the switch starts to flip (or before?!)…. I don’t know, I read that great post about having a plan…. I need a plan, and a sponsor!
I don’t know where to find the right AA or similar group either. I went along once to a hall near me, hovered outside, didn’t go in. It was a small group of people.that were not at all my demographic. How do I find my place?
Online meetings are a great way to try different ones. There are more or less religious ones, more or less casual, etc. You can find one that fits. Dharma recovery, SMART also are options.
Usually you attend the same meeting several times, see someone that is secure in sobriety and you feel some similarities, good vibes, etc, and ask them to be your sponsor. Often people who are looking for sponsees will say so or online put their phone number in the chat.
Try googling local aa to find a group in your area. Theres always online, thats where i started, but my love is in person meetings. Alcoholics come in all shapes and sizes and degrees. Try a few different meetings in your area. A same sex meeting may help you find a person who shares their experience and hope and you want what they have…ask them to go for a coffee!

The funny thing about AA is the demographic is that we’re all alcoholics, and we have the desire to stop drinking. They could black, white, Asian, young, old, female or male. It doesn’t matter because our motives are the same. That’s the first thing I noticed! It’s quite amazing
You have an open invitation to enter any of our rooms of AA that call you, when you are ready, tell them another active member (me) far away recommended you visit this particular group to be, your very first AA meeting ever in life. Surrender to say, “I am new here.”
Not at all, I totally understand. I’ve been there too, except in my situation I had already walked in and I didn’t want to be the one that turns around and walked right back out lol. I’m just sharing that that’s the beauty of AA and it’s dynamics. That’s the fellowship of AA that outside of those rooms we probably wouldn’t hang out but that one common goal brings us all together. Good luck
