Is anyone really not into 12 step groups?

I dont like rhetoric of 12 step groups. I’ve tried for years and i think they just arent for me. Has anyone tried any other support groups? I’m looking for good or bad feedback for any of them!

There are many people on here that don’t follow 12-step programs. I am one.
This is a list of all kinds of programs and other help:

I didn’t attend support groups. But I did have a small circle of reliable friends and family, an excellent GP and Mental Health Worker along with prescribed meds, stayed active here early in sobriety and took it ODAAT.
So it can be done :upside_down_face:

There’s a bunch of other types of groups - they are listed in the same posts with the twelve step groups but there are many more types of groups that are not twelve step:

Enjoy!

Edit to add - this was already posted above :man_shrugging: :slightly_smiling_face: I missed it!

Hi Madds,

There are plenty of non 12 step folks. I have never been to any group meeting. My resources post is above, it shares some other meeting info, many folks have gone to other kinds of meetings.

Certainly being active here was a big part for me personally. Finding what works (and doesn’t) for each of us unique individuals is important. Meetings are a big part for lots of people.

The resource post has lots of books too that might be of interest and helpful.

Glad I’m not the only one that’s not into these types of programs. They seem to be the default to success, thanks for asking, I am going to check out the links provided also.

Let me know what you decide to check out if you have the inclination to. Im going to try SMART first, if i dont hear any recommendations otherwise.

I really appreciate SMART. It’s one of the things I have used for support and information for quite some time.

Hey, thanks for this! Have you used their support groups then? Or more just information, skills?

SMART definitely looks interesting. I like that it’s behaviour based and scientifically tested. My therapist uses CBT as a method. I tried finding SMART meetings in my area with no luck. But I will take a look once things are back to normal post holidays aka next week.

I have gone to their support groups. Now I still study their info but most of my support time is in The Luckiest Club, or in Recovery Dharma.

I like the focus on science and psychology too. My therapist keeps pushing AA but i’m really not into the religious side. I’d rather find something supportive but evidence-based. I found some SMART meetings virtually earlier- i can look for the link again if youd like it.

What drew you to those? Sorry if in prying. Feel free to tell me to shut up

All I really ever used to get sober is this app and I will have seven years in July. I have read that about two thirds of people who get sober don’t use a 12 step program.
