Hi, I’ve heard from people who traveled to the US that there are some states that refrain from selling or serving alcohol on certain days. Is this the case in your town or city and does it help in being sober. Where I live it’s available at almost any hour of the day and in every bar.
I’m in NY. I’m pretty sure you can’t buy beer in a gas station after 2am, I know it’s at least that way in Buffalo…bars are open in Long Island and NYC, and Erie county (Buffalo) until about 4am. Everywhere else is about 2am in NY. Pretty sure you can’t serve booze in a restaurant on a Sunday until 12pm, or maybe that’s just Buffalo. I could be very off with all of this though. It’s accessible at all times pretty much though because I know for damn sure I’ve bought alcohol at gas stations much later than 2am so I guess it depends…
I lived in Buffalo for 5 years and now I’m back home in Long Island btw, that’s how I’m kinda familiar with the differences
I lived in a dry county growing up and you couldnt buy beer at the grocery store…or maybe it waa just liquor I cant remember now.
Aha I’ve never heard of a ‘dry county’ before. On Wikipedia it says that dry an wet counties are often adjacent causing people to drive longer distances under the influence of alcohol. DUI accidents are even more common in dry counties, that’s interesting.
I’m in RI now, and you can only buy beer and liquor at a package store but they are open every day. I am from NC and you had to get liquor at a liquor store but you could buy beer and wine at grocery stores/gas stations. If I remember correctly, if a gas station in NC was open 24hrs you could buy beer and wine all the time! In NC (bible belt) you couldn’t get liquor at all on Sunday and you couldn’t get beer or wine until noon on Sunday’s. Gotta go to church first Or people would just stock up on Saturday to avoid all of that. Lord knows I used to…
I’m in Montreal, Canada. Alcohol is very accessible Beer and wine can be bought at the corner store. There is a cut off time at the stores (11pm I think) but bars are open and selling until 3am.
I wasn’t one to frequent bars being a single mom but I never had an issue with running short at home
I’m in NJ and we have separate “liquor” stores for alcohol. Example: You can’t buy beer/booze inside your local grocery store, corner store, Walmart, etc. Some grocery stores are now attaching them onto their buildings but they operate separately. We do have a dry counties here, the most well known is Ocean City. It’s a family/beach town and they’d like to keep it that way (I don’t blame them it’s beautiful, full of wonderful people). As for bars, if my memory is correct, closing time is usually 2 AM so they stop serving around 1 AM. Not sure about any specific Sunday rules since a lot of people do brunch here.
In CA it’s pretty much available everywhere. Grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants. It’s sold nearly at all times, except between the wee hours of 2am - 6am. CA doesn’t follow the blue laws that other states follow, so it’s sold on Sundays too.
Also, I’ve heard Louisiana has drive thru daiquiri shops. Wth.
That’s true @Elisabeth. Louisiana has drive thru daiquiri stores (they keep the paper on the top of the straw so you don’t drink while driving…smh ) The casinos offer free beer and liquor as long as your playing a machine with no cut off time- 24/7. Here in Texas, beer is sold Monday through Saturday from 6am until midnight at stores. Bars cut off time is 2 am. Liquor stores can only be open until 9 pm Monday through Saturday and have to be closed on Sunday. You can buy beer at other stores on Sunday after 12. Well, don’t I sound like an alcoholic? Lol
Lol, you got that schedule down!!!
here in Africa we do have cut off times. You can’t buy booze from a liquor stores after hours but you can always find an open pub somewhere even if is a dive 24/7. I grew up with very strict liquor laws, but if you needed you could get no matter where you were although it was very illegal
It’s true. Though the laws have changed since the first time came here to visit in 2004. Back then a passenger in a car could have an open beverage If the driver was sober. Since Katrina, instead of forcing these businesses to close, you can buy a daiquiri at a dive through but if you put the straw through the top it is considered an “open container”. There are also bars open 24 hours, and beer/liquor are also available at every gas station 24 hours a day.
The easy access sure doesn’t help here in Louisiana…lol
You can get beer 24/7 at gas stations in Buffalo now. And restaurants can serve alcohol at 10 am Sundays now. The rules have changed in the past year or so. Bars are open until 4 am.
NC just passed a law that allows stores and restaurants to sell alcohol starting at 10:00am on Sundays as opposed to noon. Gotta get those boozy brunches going!
Lol, them damn “ABC” stores…I grew up in fayetteville, dont mess up and forget about a holiday that landed on Sunday lol, and the 9 PM on sat. BS always pissed me off too lol. I Lived in a dry county for a while too, there were about 3 of the 15 towns/communities that actually sold alcohol and u could hang it up on 2 of those on sundays, if u didnt stock up on sat. like u said it was a 15 mile drive to get a beer.
It didnt make a damn tho, I always hid stuff around the house and runnin out meant it was time for a treasure hunt…or deplete the ex wifes wine supply and piss her off first thing Sunday morning lol.
I have a friend in salt lake city that says the lower alcohol content in their booze and extremely narrow window to buy it has helped him quit tho, guess it depends on the person and their determination.
I was a good alcoholic. There was always more than enough booze to carry me over until the store opened. Never leave the liquor store without an extra handle… You know for for company. That was in addition to the beer, wine, and other spirits that I didn’t drink.
