Jun. 1st mind blowing random thought of the day: Rutherford B. Hayes became president via the Compromise of 1877, in which he didn’t win either the popular vote nor the electoral college, as 20 disputed votes remained undecided. Hayes required all 20 in order to win the election, but his Democratic opponent, Samuel J. Tilden, only needed 1 to claim victory. However, the Independent Commission ordered that all 20 votes go to Hayes, which the Democrats eventually agreed to on the condition that Hayes promise not to run for a second term as well as end the military occupation in the southern states to allow for them to take back political control. Hayes accepted the terms of the deal and was thereafter made President of the United States.
