Sex & Porn Addiction Recovery

I just got to the end of the thread and realized that I am home alone with no healthy plan in place. The instinct is to act out because, well, I don’t have a plan in place. I would usually make a list or have an activity planned on days I don’t work. Today I really had two things on my plate this morning then get to a meeting this evening. So I came here and read this thread and was reminded that it’s a choice. I choose to do what’s healthy for me and moves me forward in life or choose to go backwards to a miserable, lonely, nightmarish existence. The lie I tell myself is that I can have one without the other. That I could act out without any adverse effect on my life. But that is not the case. I will choose to do something healthy for me before my meeting in 1.5 hrs. Thanks guys

Good choice Smokey! It’s worth it to make the wise choice.

Hey guys. I owe you all an apology. I promised I wouldn’t go back, but I broke the promise I made. I am better again, but I need to own up to my mistake and ask for forgiveness. I hope you guys can trust me in the future sometime.

That being said, I have made some changes regarding how I handle the temptation, as well as new game plans to act before I react. I look forward to seeing improvements in my sobriety. Day 2 is complete, now, and it’s going well so far (touched base again with people in my life just today, and plan to do more tomorrow).

Anyway, long story short, I am back and better than before, but I still owe each of you my honesty and apology. I am off to bed, but I will check back in on this forum tomorrow sometime. See you all then!

The only person you ought to be apologizing to on this forum is yourself.

One thing that I’ve learned through years of failure (still working on it), is how to admit when the cravings/triggers occur and how to deal with them appropriately. Now when I see something triggering, I have to make a conscious choice to identify the problem and confront it.

You have a good point, so thank you for bringing that up. Thank you for being willing to teach me that, as well.

That is good advice. I have been learning about myself a lot in this changing process. I still am, at times. But that advice is what I need to apply next

I’m filling in for the Institute teacher this next Thursday and was studying for the lesson. Elder Bednar’s teachings have a recurring theme, “We are not objects that are acted upon.” The natural man is an enemy to God. Being blessed with a mortal body, the temple of God, as Corinthians states, makes us greater than Satan. He desires us to be miserable like unto himself. That means that he will do all in his power to make us abuse the mortality we are given. That includes not just the misuse of our bodies, but the un-use of them. We must be agents unto ourselves and do things of our own free will and choice.

In addiction the principles ring as true as ever.

Congratulations on having and taking the opportunity to teach as an Institute teacher. I love my Institute classes, and my teachers are great people. I think you would do well as one, from what I have found on the forum.

I like Elder Bednar quite a bit; he always speaks with clarity and has articles that always back him up. This concept reminds me a bit of Come, Follow Me (the new Sunday School curriculum we are using this year). We have an opportunity to study and learn things for ourselves; in the process, we become better converted and love the gospel and it’s teachings more than any other way of learning. And it makes sense - I often don’t remember what teachers teach me (even the best lessons leave my mind at some point), but when I apply what I study on my own, the teaching usually retains with me much longer. Seems like a great curriculum so far

Congratulations in 50 days. That’s awesome!!
Just remember, it is always a choice to use. We can hope for calm seas, but we can decide, every morning, not to use.

Hey @Newpath30,

Big congratulations on 2 weeks, man! I’m proud of you for the self discipline when it’s so easy to cave. Keep going! It’s worth it.

@Kwahere

Hey there friend, thought I’d tag you in this thread just to give you an opportunity to read old posts or ask questions. There’s a handful of us that identify as porn addicts. Welcome!

The best thing that helped with my sobriety from porn was a book titled Breaking the Cycle by George Collins. It helped me to deal with the internal dialogue that I really struggled with.

I wish you well on your journey!
