It’s 80 years ago the Royal Canadian Dragoons liberated Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland. Jim Parks is the last member of the liberators still alive. 100 years old now, In his honour, that of the regiment, the Canadian army and the whole Canadian nation the local football club SC Cambuur made in this special edition shirt that sold out in minutes. Thanks for your service and love forever from Netherlands to Canada.

Tomorrow I will be attending The A-League Grand Final to cheer for my team in the Melbourne Derby between the Mighty Melbourne Victory and those wanna be deadbeats Melbourne City. I will be attending a few pubs pre game for the carnival atmosphere and have done so in the past with no such issues.

Of note, Simon did win the World Cup two or so weeks ago.

MLB Homerun Derby… Watch for Athletics Rookie Wilson… I hope he can do well.

Been occasionally buying this box that has about 100 random baseball cards that are in great condition that span like 3 decades and then also usually there will be a unopened pack from the 80s or 90s. It’s been a while since I watched baseball or played baseball but I did play baseball from T-ball all the way to high school. This is very nostalgic and i used to be really into collecting baseball cards. I’m going to have to look the majority of these players up because I am not sure. In this box I think the Roger Clemens card (1989) that I put in the case was the best one so far but I’m not positive I have to look him up but I’m pretty sure he was a very good pitcher. Thought this was pretty cool but I didn’t know where to post this. Obviously I don’t expect any of these to be in mint condition or anything and it’s mostly just for the fun and never know what you’re going to get. I have some pretty rare cards at my parents house that I refuse to sell. Like Derek Jeter college card and I have some rare Cal Ripken cards, Barry Bonds rookie, stuff like that

I have a football one also but I know absolutely nothing about football. As far as players. I know the rules and how to play but I never watched it on TV. Baseball I’m a little more familiar with players and spotting cards.

I was HUGE into card collecting as a kid, from what I understand it’s really made a comeback. Baseball is my favorite sport but I loved basketball as a kid so most of my cards were that. I’ve never seen something like this for sale where it’s just a general assortment from multiple time periods. Very cool.

You are correct about Clemens - he is one of the greatest, most dominant pitchers the game has ever seen. However his legacy is overshadowed by his PED/Steroid use, as well as having a reputation as a complete asshole. A player with his stats would typically be an unquestionable hall of famer, but he has been kept out because of these things (mostly because of the former, but being an asshole in the process doesn’t help).

That’s awesome I definitely relate similar story I was always collecting baseball cards more than any other sport. Because I was playing baseball and watching ESPN every morning I knew what I was looking for when I was buying unopened packs or going through cards at stores. But yeah exactly when I was at Walgreens and saw this random box of cards I was pretty excited but the first time I got a football set and like I said I had no idea what I was looking for. Then yesterday I saw a baseball one so I had to get it.

Now that you mention it I do remember hearing about the stuff about Roger Clemens and his use of performance enhancing drugs. I guess that can be a sensitive topic or whatever you wanna call it but Where do you draw the line because at that level of playing pretty much everybody is doing something to enhance their playing. Maybe I’m wrong.

This makes me want to go to my parents house and find the box with all of my cards I have them sorted by which is rare and stuff like that. My best collection is I have close to 100 Cal Ripken Jr cards. I might sell that as a set one day but it would have to be a crazy amount of money because some of those cards are worth hundreds of dollars just for individual ones.

There’s some great documentaries about the steroid era. i think ESPN made one in their 30-for-30 series. Clemens was not only involved in the steroid era/scandal, he was one of the main faces of it (the others being Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and to a lesser extent Rafael Palmeiro).

Clemens also has the distinction of lying to congress about his use of PEDs :grimacing:

He was acquitted of the perjury, but everyone knows he lied.

I’m definitely going to have to watch something pretty soon about that because this is bringing back so many memories and it’s crazy to think about that era and especially that home run race between a couple of those guys that was epic regardless. Sosa and McGuire? I think that’s the one I’m thinking of whatever year that was when they were neck and neck the whole season.. In fact I’m going to look right now I guarantee there’s some thing on Tubi or prime about that

I collected the Ripken cards Because I’m born in Baltimore and because I guess I had a lot of respect for the whole Iron Man thing. That’s dedication playing no matter what

I know for a fact ESPN did a 30-for-30 doc specifically about the McGwire/Sosa home run race. “Long Gone Summer”, really good.

Thanks man !! I might post these football cards also but I don’t know any of these players lol the only one that is for some reason ringing a bell is Derrick Thomas? I don’t know why that name is standing out and that might just be random for no reason at all. Maybe it just sounds like he was a good football player but he’s not. Honestly the football set has even more rare ones or really old cards. I think it’s worth it for $10. Plus at some point I’m literally going to look up every single one of these players

If it’s THE Derrick Thomas, the one that played for the Chiefs in the 90s, he was a phenomenal football player. Hall of famer.

Sad story though, after his 10th season he got in an accident and paralyzed from the waist down. Passed away shortly thereafter.

Yeah that’s who it is! Damn that is a sad story But at least he got to live his dream and made his mark. Thanks TMAC !! I was actually hoping you were going to see this post because I figured you knew about sports and if the Roger Clemens card was good!! plus just sports info in general. I remember seeing post of you going to MLB games.I used to go to Camden yards a lot when I lived in Pennsylvania Because it was only an hour drive to Baltimore. Occasionally I’ll look through this thread or other sports ones. Sports have always been a major part of my life but during addiction I stopped really doing anything like that and also after a certain point I got more into extreme sports like skateboarding and snowboarding. But I think that’s because it’s more acceptable to do drugs and drink alcohol with extreme sports than it is with regular sports.. Just being honest. But also that could just be my perception. I’m definitely going to check out some of those documentaries you suggested. Thanks again

Just to put in context how good Clemens was…then I’ll quiet my yap

What is generally considered the standard for measuring the quality of a player in baseball is WAR, “Wins above replacement”, which is calculated based on several different stats and weighted based on position etc. It’s complicated and I don’t even fully understand it - but very simply, the higher the WAR, the better the player. It makes it possible to compare players from different eras, etc.

ALL TIME, among ALL players, Clemens is 8th in WAR. Among pitchers all-time, he is third, behind Cy Young and Walter Johnson. Young is the guy they named the award after for the best pitcher each season. Johnson is considered the greatest pitcher ever, by many. Then there’s Clemens.

There’s only 32 players all-time that have a WAR of 100 or higher.

I miss being close to a Major league stadium as far as driving or at least day trips. I don’t think I’m ever going to leave Jacksonville Florida ever again but if I did I would make sure I was no more then one hour from an MLB stadium. The closest to me is the rays which is a 4 or 5 Hour Drive so that would not be a day trip.. And Marlins is six hours

ps: Also there is the factor that I’ve never drove on the highway in my life. I’m actually terrified of driving and don’t drive unless I absolutely have to so really if I did leave Jacksonville I would have to live very very close to a major league stadium for me to go. Like right downtown from whatever stadium it would be

Stat nerd as well, no wonder I do analytics for a living.

Stat nerd AND history nerd, no wonder I love baseball.

The screenshot I posted is from baseball-reference.com, which I only discovered for myself a year or so ago. I can literally spend HOURS on there messing around and can say with certainty I’m on there everyday at least once. Can pull any numbers you want, cut them however you want, can even look up individual games from a hundred years ago. Anything you can imagine. Freakin cool website.

They also produce the “immaculate grid”, a daily game thats like sudoku but its with baseball players. I’ve done all 800+ of them
