“A rough flu” is misleading if you don’t also emphasize that so far, the mortality rate and rate of infection seem to be quite a lot higher than regular flu — cf the 1918 H1N1 flu, which killed 50 million worldwide. The reason for the media to discuss this isn’t to cause panic. We don’t need to panic. We just need to be smart. It’s because, if we know the facts, we can choose safer behaviors. I think it’s great that right now, I can feel like I’m being heroic, saving lives, because I’m staying in bed reading novels all day.

Im not fazed going abput my life, if i get it not worried. Im 42 fit in some ways for my age look after my body. The biggest problem is social media and scaring ppl and making them into Sheep over stocking up.The closure of schools or businesses ie places were ppl work is just going to hurt ppl financially big time…ppl are going to get this Virus regardless just let it run its course and let us live our lives…im sick of the news and Facebook being Swamped by the Corona Virus. I understand they dont want to many people getting it at once Because it uses up medical staff and hospital staff…but every thing pretty much kills the elderly and immune weak not just this Corona Virus. Im over it all.

On a daily basis, more people worldwide are dying from the seasonal flu than “covid-19”
Media are blowing way way out of proportion.
My brother was in Thailand, Phuket. He came back yesterday (Sunday) to UK.
While lying in his room watching BBC news, reporting live from Phuket beach,it showed no more than 10 people walking around the beach. So he went out and took a walk himself. The beach was “PACKED!” he said.
Fake news was being broadcast.
Something not quite right about the whole thing…imho

Spot on. But what I cant work out is why are the world governments/media causing this hysteria & panic?!?

The government orders I have seen aren’t a cause for panic. They ask that we stay home and wash hands.

That presents hardships. How we respond is our choice.

I do wonder what I can do for those this is more difficult for.

Let’s put it this way my bedroom closet is slap full of to and paper towels and water. I have a 1 box and 1 full size freezer slap full of meat, bread, froz veg and cheese. A pantry and full size storage cabinet full of pantry staples and canned goods. I did all of this last week because there are infected in our area and schools shut down. Also our restaurants, libraries, bars, and recreational things are closed. I live in a teeny tiny small farm town where closest shopping is 45 minutes away.

These are not actors - they are mostly bright young Italians who were completely taken by surprise by the rapid spread of the Covid-19 plague (we can’t deny this is a plague, just like the locusts in East Africa BTW).
About 30,000 people infected and well over 2,000 deaths in a few weeks… that is why Europe is now in a state of alert and the USA catching up too…

There is such a panic and hype for no reason. I can’t believe it. Everything is being cancelled. My school has moved online, my doctor and dentist appointments have been cancelled. Meetings closed. The only thing that keeps me busy now is working for UBer eats and delivering food. I’m in westchester NY. I’m 10 minutes drive from new Rochelle where all of this is happening and 75% of restaurants there are closed and order only so business for me is good right now. I’m doing deliveries in the hot spot and making a killing lol. It’s crazy how people in 2020 have no idea how to wash their hands or if they sneeze or cough how to do so and not spread germs. You would think in this day and age, people would know this. I was disgusted when I was walking down the street and saw someone cough without covering their mouths. Honestly it drives me crazy. It’s up there with chewing with your mouth full. People are disgusting. It really shouldn’t shock me. I think it’s all hyped and the media is perpetuating this fear mongering which has left every supermarket around me empty. Also what is this irrational purchasing of toilet paper!?!? Am I the only one who believes majority of the population is uneducated, unhygienic and irrational? Sorry if I’m being harsh, but all this hype and fear mongering has left me with these feelings

There seems to be a lot of people on here spouting off their views of it being overhyped and irrational. Let’s make sure we’re paying attention to what the CDC is stating and trying to promote. It’s not just about washing hands and coughing into your elbow. The reason we are social distancing is to slow the spread of the virus. If the virus is allowed to run rampant, our hospital systems will become way more crowded than they already are. Then we will have significantly more deaths. Not just from COVID-19, but from people not being able to get the services they need.

With the world quarantining, essentials are needed. That shouldn’t mean hoarding, but that is something that happens. Being prepared is important. Everyone should be prepared for things like this. What happens when a complete lockdown happens and people are advised to not leave their homes for the next X number of weeks. Suddenly grocery stores are even more empty than they already are.

Let’s not jump to conclusions based on emotions.

I gave an elderly neighbor that’s like a grandma to me and my kids. I cook for her all the time and get her stuff from the store. I also have a sweet young teacher that lives on the other side and we all look out for one another.

Maybe the fact that people are hoarding toilet paper is over the top but the fact that schools and appointments are getting closed are not. This is all for your own safety. My boss was in Costa Rica last week where someone at the resort tested positive for Coronavirus. We work in very close quarters. She knows I am at very high risk due to my cirrhosis and said nothing to any of us-we all found out she could have it because she texted it to one employee nonchalantly. Carelessness like this will get people like me very sick. It’s fine to state an opinion but don’t be stupid about it on here…this is really serious.

Agreed. Thousands are dying right now because of it.

The flu killed more people compared to the coronavirus. It’s only a small amount that die but the rest have recovered. It’s way to hyped. Ebola was a serious problem but no one was concerned about it but for some reason this has everyone in a panic. My friend can’t get wipes for her 7 month old because people went out and cleared every supermarket and she drove to 15 different places all through out the county and wasn’t able to find anything. The fear and the way people are reacting are far more serious and dangerous than the virus

Like I said massive difference between hoarding and you saying it’s silly for schools and doctors appointments. I agree nobody needs to be buying out the local Walmart’s wipe section. It’s fear based and it’s how shitty. But shutting down the country and putting it on lockdown is necessary. It’s about how it spreads. How fast it can move and if you’re sick and get it you can get pneumonia and die. People with respiratory problems are at high risk. The list goes on and on.

Do you think you are actually helping anybody by saying this.
Nothing to back up such a worrying statement.
" Everything just got a bit more serious"
