Ok I don’t know if this is silly or what but I’ve been clean for 9 months off meth, alcohol and weed. But since I’ve been clean my issue has been my vape. It’s my new bad habit and even though it doesn’t give me the negative side effects like the drugs used to, I still catch myself constantly needing to step away from my kids, spending way too much money, and “needing” it 24/7. Its like because I am not picking up a pipe now I need to pick up my vape. I use a mod and most of the time do 0 nicotine so it’s not even the tobacco that I am stuck on. I feel like it’s just another bad habit that I have replaced everything else with. I don’t know why it’s so hard for me to not have it in my hand constantly. Its like my brain HAS to be smoking something but it’s so stupid.
It’s not stupid. It’s common. Replacing one addiction with another. It’s usually something that grabs us. I have people in my online meetings frustrated that they started shopping for things they don’t need, started over eating, social media scrolling, game playing.
I spend time I shouldn’t playing a dumb ass game on my phone - just to keep my thoughts from running amok. It takes the same energy and dedication to keep those things at bay.
AND it’s hard.
It definitely isn’t silly. Like @EarnIt says, we replace one addiction with another. It is pretty common. Sobriety from our drug(s) of choice is the beginning. Recovery involves finding healthy ways of coping / being / living. I have been sober from alcohol for 9 years, various drugs and nicotine/cigarettes for much longer…and I still need to make a conscious effort at times not to stuff my feelings with sugar, shopping or scrolling. Some days more success than others…it fluctuates.
It is good you are aware. It took me a long time to move away from the act of smoking, I feel you there.
