When did you all get a sponsor and start working the steps? Today marks 15 days and I’ve gone to a few meetings and I keep hearing how you can’t stay sober if you don’t work the program but I’m really nervous.

Is it absolutely necessary to have a sponsor?

I cannot find anywhere in the AA Big Book that says you have to choose a “sponsor”. And this book was written by the founder, the head guru. So where did this sponsorship thing come from? I don’t have a problem with an accountability partner but i don’t want someone telling me what to do on a daily basis… I’m afraid if i got a sponsor and that person was pressuring me to do things that i wasn’t able to do that i would just get angry and quit the whole program. HELP: Im a recovering alcoholicthat doesn’t know ny thing about finding a decent sponsor. I.e. where to find one, what to look for in a sponsor, how do i go about asking a person to be my sponsor, and what is is role of a sponsor. Also can I fire a sponsorif it isnt working out. As of lately I have been doing alot of SMART recovery is this route of recovery shunned by AA groups or can they work in tandem?

Looking for a sponsor-like person

I’m clawing back trying to find this sobriety, starting that day one again, ready to start facing those demons that’ve defeated me so many times before. Every other time I’ve tried to do this on my own and I don’t think that I’ll succeed in that fashion. Im nervous about picking a sponsor

So i finally decided i would give AA a fair shot, even though i used to be against it… i went to a really good meeting tonight and picked up my white chip. They told me i need to get a sponsor as soon as possible.
