Looking for other Recovery Coaches here. Think it’d be nice to have a thread that we can collaborate, complain, encourage and help each other!
Welcome again Erin.
We do have a daily checkin thread. I don’t know about recovery coaches. But that’s kind of where many of us check in, complain, collaborate, encourage, support each other. Some with long term sobriety some short term and everything in between.
Hope to see you around.
Agree with @Dazercat
Though if there do appear to be quite a few, a thread could always start, much like we have for Food, Art, Workouts, etc. It would quickly be removed or reported, IMO, if there was discussion about making money. I could be wrong.
Did you do a search at all looking for more?
Edited to add: My quick search didn’t show that there are many. I have been around here since 2016, and don’t ever recall seeing it often.
Sorry i just sponsor free of charge
isn’t that what a sponsor is for?
I’d like to thank the OP for this, there are wonderful organizations out there providing recovery support. Usually the folks are covered by insurance in the USA for these services. I worked in this field in Arizona for almost 10 years and it’s a valuable career for people in recovery, being able to use their experience and gain employment when other opportunities may not be available to them (not always the case but sometimes). They work alongside psychiatrists and therapists and lead groups of all kinds, skill building groups and support groups like grief and loss.
Thanks @intoxicatedteetotalr Erin for your post. I don’t think there are many who understand how valuable your vocation is. I’d love to hear more about your experience as a recovery coach. What does that look like where you are in Michigan? I’m a Michigander by the way!
In the United Kingdom, the average salary for a recovery coach is around £23,738 annually, with a base pay range of £20K to £29K per year
While both recovery coaches and sponsors in 12-step programs like AA/NA offer support in recovery, recovery coaches are trained professionals who may or may not have lived experience with addiction, and focus on a broader range of recovery needs, while sponsors are experienced members of the program who guide others through the 12-step process
This! I definitely understand. I have looked into it for a long time, even now. Thanks for posting that, @RosaCanDo!
I appreciate your dedication to the 12 step program. It isn’t the best fit for everyone. As far as I know (and I could be wrong) in America there are certification programs for peer recovery support positions. There may be monetized versions much like the detox and rehab centers that cost people a fortune but there are other legitimate situations where peer support or recovery coach workers are valuable members of someone’s treatment plan.
Edit to say that the certifications I’m familiar with require someone to identify as someone in recovery and be willing to share their own experiences as part of support for others.
Over here in the Netherlands the work is called ervaringswerker or ervaringsdeskundige (experience worker or experience expert) so by definition being one means you have lived experience. It’s not yet a ‘protected’ title, so anybody can call themselves this though there are a lot of education possibilities these days, college degrees to be gained, and there is work being done to make the title protected like it is with doctors, nurses psychologists etcetera.
Having read a bit about the work of recovery coaches in the USA it’s a lot alike. Me myself I prefer to call myself a health professional (I’m a registered mental health nurse) with experiential expertise. Meaning my main work is as a nurse but I use my experiences with addiction and mental health in a therapeutic way, having reflected extensively on those experiences and also having educated myself in profitable (for my clients) ways of using said experiences. A lot of words sorry but can’t say it any shorter.
Over here I’m just another addict, substance abuser, whatever we call it. I’m here with my peers to help myself and hopefully sometimes help another one as well. Rather different from my work.
Who said anything about charging? First, I am looking to connect with other RECOVERY COACHES. Second, I work for a community based agency that serves people in our community that cannot afford the services we offer. We are state funded, not profit based. If you’d like to assume some more though, feel free. You get to live with that.
As stated previously, I am looking to connect with other RECOVERY COACHES. I am not seeking to sponsor anyone. Carry on.
Thank you. I’m really unsure how anyone came to the post and took it as me trying to sponsor or offer services. I thought it was clear that I was looking to connect with others in the field. I also work for a community based agency that is state funded, not for profit. I guess some people perceive things in an odd way and add things to something that was never said. And hello fellow Michigander!
Appreciate the information you provided, although I only came here to connect with others in the field. I have no desire to offer services here and was hoping to link with others that deal with the same work related stressors I do. I was in active addiction for 25 years with 2 years clean now. Anyways… It was clearly taken in the opposite direction by others, which is still quite baffling to me. Is what it is.
Keep on keeping on! Worldwide online platforms mean that there can be misunderstandings, I’ve been here for several years and I see it happen a lot. I’d love to hear more about your work and what it entails. I also worked for a non profit organization and it was really helpful to people.
I never mentioned charging ??? all stated my services are free i am mc Laren funded well done on 2 years clean is what it is ,
Thank you! I have just over 2 years clean and was in active addiction for 25 years. My certification required me to have a co-occurring disorder. I am also a part of NA but that is separate from my career where I help those in recovery choose what works best for them. Recovery is not black in white as some seem to think. Appreciate you.
Yes, I searched but didn’t find anything relevant to my question.
Free of charge. Ray, you offer some good support but this is what you said and then posted something about what recovery coaches make in the UK. Not helpful here on this person’s thread.
I think this field started in mental health and thank goodness moved to understanding cooccurring disorders are a huge issue.
