Day 4! And advice on getting through holidaysâŚ
Welcome to the community! Great work on 4 days
This is a great community to be a part ofâŚI spent a lot of time here during the early days which helped me stay sober. Many amazing threads to read through for support and advice.
The Checking in daily to maintain focus #72 thread is a great space to check in as many times as you need for support and accountability.
I am not sure of your drug of choiceâŚtry to have a clean space so you are not triggered and donât have easy access.
If you are attending gatherings for the holidays - try to have an escape room or are able to get away if you become overwhelmed.
Have something in hand so you are not offered a drink.
Check out local meetings for AA or other recovery groups so you know whatâs available and where (may even be online).
This place is active all day everyday day so youâll always find someone around.
Take it one moment at a timeâŚtry not to think about past mistakes or future events, what ifsâŚjust get through the moment at hand. As long as you survive the day sober you have won!
Happy to have you here with us.
Thank you so much!!!
Alcohol will not win anymore!
And it has helped that my family knows my situation and Iâm hoping will take it into consideration.
But I know this is only on me and my journey.
Thank you again for reaching out!
How long has your journey been may I ask?
I would just forget that itâs a holiday and try and see it as just a set of days. Take care of yourself in other ways like hot baths, warm drinks, quiet reading. Good luck, try not to put the holiday notion before your sobriety.
This will be helpful and I do hope they help you on your journey
I just passed my 2 year of complete sobriety a few days ago. It is still surreal as I wasnât able to put two days together prior to this. You are among friends here who understand and can help in the journey⌠keep pushing forward
Welcome Kaleigh,
Ya, donât drink!!
Congratulations on your 4 days going into the Holidays. Iâm always surprised at the number of sober birthdays I see in December. In my experience it way out numbers the sober birthdays in January.
Take it one day at a time. Have escape routes. Always have your own glass with a drink of sparkling water in it. And there is not one party you have to go to.
Be on here a lot. Read around. Explore threads. Thereâs lots of great support here.
Gratitude is my most powerful tool in sobriety. It will retrain your brain if you actively practice it. Read it here
Write it here
Keep us in your pocket. Many of us have made through our first sober Christmas. We can and will be grateful to be able to help you.
Just ask. The lights are always on.
Thank you thank you!!!
I already feel like I have family here.
Maybe try a meeting ,meet new like minded friends who have been were you are now wish you well
Welcome Kaleigh! My advice for the holidays would be to spend as much time as you can with people who understand you and your experiences, and donât judge you for them.
Talking Sober is full of lots of people who understand. Another helpful place a lot of people visit is recovery meetings (these are free and are available in person and online). Thereâs a list of groups here: Resources for our recovery
Welcome to Talking Sober!
Thank you so much!!!
Welcome to the forum, @Onedayatatime2, and congratulations on 4 days of sobriety. The good news is that the worst is behind you in terms of early days!
Not much to add to what others have written, other than: holidays do not NEED to be celebrated with alcohol, thatâs just a social construct that we have made up and can choose not to buy into. If however you can feel your resolve faltering, come talk to us as there is always someone around here.
I hope you have a few wonderful days with family and loved ones. Keep that warm tea or cold soft drink close by and you will be absolutely fine!
