Just turned 50 and I wanna do better

Hey All, I am new here and thought I’d introduce myself!?! I got started a little late to the drinking game but have definitely made up for it since then. I love my workouts, I nourish my body, and then start pouring wine down my throat, then start it all over again the next day🤪 I went through a spell where I literally “checked out” and blacked out most nights I drank. I have done a lot of work on myself and have resorted to the moderation game for the last few years. I have always said I don’t want to be drinking after 50 (Probably because that used to sound so old, haha). Anyway, I turned 50 last week and maybe I just thought I would magically get zapped into a sober dimension but no… it didn’t happen. I am here to do the work. I have to get uncomfortable and probably feel a lot of shit that I’ve been drowning with alcohol. But, I am ready! I don’t wanna do this anymore. I am here to support and hopefully be supported by all of you lovely people out there on the same path as me:)

Welcome to Talking Sober, it’s good to see you.

I do relate to that thinking! And you are right, it is work to get sober. But so worth it.

Here’s a topic to get you thinking about different paths to sobriety.

Welcome to TS! I got sober in my 50s as well…it is definitely worth it and makes workouts a hell of a lot more enjoyable not being hungover or dehydrated!!

Welcome aboard, @SoberLush . I think you will find this is a helpful, informative, and supportive community. It’s a great place to come when you feel the urge to drink; someone is always here ready to help. Many of us check on daily on the Checking In thread. I find TS a godsend. I waited until 59, last month in fact, to choose sobriety, and I am already feeling its benefits. So, read around in the different threads. A lot of TS users use AA, but others are doing SMART recovery, Recovery Dharma, and/or finding out what works best for them individually.
I’m glad to meet you and hope to see you around.

Right?! There are not enough facial creams in the world to undo what alcohol does! I am excited to see the difference.🫶🏼

Welcome you Sober Lush you :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
Love your name

I waited til I was 60. Fat drunk and hungover was no way to go through my bronze years. I definitely wish I started my sobriety journey sooner. I love all the free time not planning my life around my next drink.

My strongest tool is gratitude. I started off every day for my first 3 years right here on the gratitude thread.

I got so much to be grateful for when I’m sober. I got nothing when I’m drinking. After a while I actually retrained my brain. It’s such a powerful tool. Great bunch over there.

You’ve found yourself a great supportive sober community if you’re willing to keep an open mind and use what you like and leave the rest.
Hope to see you around.

Awww… Thank you!! I haven’t came across that gratitude thread yet so I will definitely take advantage of that! I did find the journal feature though and love that it is connected within the app🤗 My brain is going to need a lot of retraining I’[m afraid… I am only on Day 3 but excited for the changes ahead:)

I’ve been there with the whole blackout thing. My routine was crazy. Wake up sick, drink, nap, drink, chill, drink to pass out, wake up, drink, pass out again and repeat. It was miserable. I’ve found I am a true full blown alcoholic myself. I am exactly as the AA big book describes. I cannot stop when I start and the insanity that precedes the first drink is crazy. It’s a big step to want to do better. With that you have the willingness. It has been difficult a lot of times, but I just don’t want to go back. I’ve been back at that day one enough times. I’m tired of it. As hard as it seems being sober is the better way. Our alcoholic life seemed the one way so we have to act ourselves into realizing that we can live without and live better. I wish you the best in your journey. This is just from my experience and what I’ve learned of course also
